How Can You Help?

 

 

Rescues and shelters are non-profit organizations staffed by volunteers and in the case of some shelters, a few employees also.  Anyone who has ever fostered dogs or cleaned out dirty kennels can tell you it is not easy work...but it is rewarding in the end when a foster dog finds a good home.  Maybe you aren't able to help with fostering but there are many other ways you can get involved & be part of the happy endings for dogs in your local shelter or rescue groups.

 

Hands on Physical Help

1. Offer to walk dogs 

2. Offer to assist with home visits,transports or trips to the vet

3. Assist wtih obediance classes for rescue dogs

4. Spend time playing with dogs

5. Clean out kennels or crates & help with laundry

 

Donations

6. Purchase dog food

7. Donate collars,leashes,heartworm preventative,shampoo,etc

8. Donate cleaning supplies,towels or other bedding,dog toys, dog treats,etc

9. Attend garage sales,etc to obtain used crates.

10. Bake doggie treats

11. Clip coupons for dog food & treats

12. Organize a paper drive or can recycling drive among neighbors or co-workers

13. Sponsor several foster dogs that need to be boarded 

 

Paperwork

14. Write letters to the editor concerning dog adoption,spay & neutering,etc

15. Assist with creating & posting flyers.

16. Help with the paperwork or office legwork of the group

 

Public Work

17. Solicit local companies and businesses for donations to rescue fundraisers

18. Act as a liaison between shelters/pounds and rescuers--notifying breed rescues of dogs needing to be saved.

19. Become involved in educating the public concerning the needs of shelters & rescues, pet ownership, spay & neutering, animal cruelty,etc

20. Spearhead programs that involve youth & the elderly in caring for animals

 

Miscellaneous

21. Help  local shelter or pound workers identify dog breeds

22. Offer expertise in your field-- web services, law, medical, training, grooming,etc
