National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets
Professors often said of history: it is a type of propaganda made for any citizen to love their country even more. The same can be said for National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. For any citizen, it might as well massage any form of pride one has for his country. It highlights what made the US so attractive: conspiracies and global domination. It made Americas role in shaping history more colorful, attractive and enigmatic.
Of course, none of the information given in the film can be easily verifiedand that was what made it so controversial. Mixing fact, fiction and concoction was The Da Vinci Codes claim to fameand clearly it is what NT2 is banking on, matched with the technological fanfare of Tomb Raider. If anything else, the Brady Bunch would have been put to shame by the central characters familys reunion deep within Mount Rushmore.
Of course, American Pride would be so massaged by this film that everyone would automatically assume that theyd find an old book stashed deep within the Library of Congress. Or begin splashing water on Mount Rushmore to find an engraved eagle. On second thought, nobody would be that crazy but who knows?
Its rather crustier messages could be seen as the abovementionedbut the truth is, what it should tell you is that every government, rather, the powers that be, was, is and will always be willing and able to cover up any part of history they want to just so they could protect their places in the world. It is always conflict and collaboration between the superpowers and their vested interests in particular situations.
The disturbing outcome of such a situation is that all of us regular human beings are being played out like pawns in their chessboard. They have their secrets, their tie-ups, their hidden wealth and the truth behind every situation, while all of us are left to produce, serve, and slave our days away thinking that we are safe and benefiting. The truth is that most of the secrets they keep affect how are lives should have beenand that the outcome of those kept secrets served no one but the few who hold power, and still are in power.
And dont get any illusions: the US is just one of the countries that hold such secrets. Though the secrets may be less dramatic than what was shown in NT2, those secrets aggravated problems for the greater masses, and made the powerful even more omniscient. In the Philippines, most people think that the Americans liberated the countrybut the truth is, not only did they expose us to grave danger during WWII, they even exploited the natural resources of the country and made its economy dependent on their surplus.
There are secretsof course. But unlike noble claims of national security and stability among nations (Nicolas Cage even quoted Montesquieu on that one), there are many, many secrets that even good men have been deceived into keeping, just so men in power could stay in their thrones. So many lives have been wasted in seeking recognition for great deedseven deeds that would have resulted into a deed of sale for their souls to Satan. In the end, these discoveries of great secrets would have been nothing more than a repair of events that come too little, too late.
