Is the Pope the Antichrist?
Here's a page which has a list of quotes by protestants who believed the Pope was the antichrist. I don't agree with the author's theology (he's Seventh Day Adventist), but his argument is clear: A bunch of well known protestants (Luther, Wesley, Calvin, Knox, etc) taught that the Pope as the antichrist. Even the 1647 Westminster Confession of Faith declared it as an article of faith (which every reformed Christian had to believe):
There is no other head of the Church, but the Lord Jesus Christ; nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God (1647 Westminster Confession of Faith Ch 25, VI)
Ouch! Ironically the Revelation doesn't even mention Mr. Antichrist figure! Antichrist shows up 4 times in the entire NT: 1 John 2:18, 1 John 2:22, 1 John 4:3, 2 John 1:7
And they tell us few simple things: There's many of them (1 John 2:18). They deny the father and the son (1 John 2:22). They were deceivers who deny Christ's humanity (2 John 1:7). So who was St. John referring to??
Simple: The first century gnostics are the antichrists. Plain and simple exegesis...of course...all of this is just my opinion ;)
So does the pope deny Christ's humanity? Nope. Does he deny the father and the son? Nope. Were there a whole bunch of popes living at the same time? Nope.
