Christmas Concert 2004

The Chorus Urbanus and soloists interpreting John Galea's "Missa Ignes Charitatis" during the Christmas Concert at St George's Basilica.

The Chorus Urbanus kept its annual appointment for the Christmas period by successfully presenting his seventh consecutive edition of the Christmas Concert. This time the concert was held at the St George's Basilica in Victoria on Wednesday, 22nd December 2004 in front of a packed basilica. It had been a long time since the Choir sang at St George's Basilica and this concert was a highly emotional return for both Choir members and the eager parishioners who filled the basilica.

The Concert was organised by the Chorus Urbanus Productions with the collaboration of the Victoria Local Council and the Rt. Chapter of St George's Basilica. The Chorus Urbanus together with the Junior Section of the Choir were accompanied by the National Orchestra (leader: Marcelline Agius). Soloists Yvonne Galea (soprano), Joseph Aquilina (tenor), Mario Portelli (tenor) and Noel Galea (bass) also took part in the concert.

The concert opened with the presentation of the Mass "Missa Ignes Charitatis" by Mro. John Galea. This new mass was being sung in its totality for the first time during this concert. The choir and orchestra gave an impeccable interpretation of this beautiful musical work which was evidenced by the long applauses that followed.

As in previous years, attendance for this concert was free however during the concert a special collection was made in aid of the Community Chest Fund which amounted to Lm400. In fact the concert was being held under the auspices of HE. Dr. Edward Fenech Adami, President of Malta, who is the Chairman of this Fund. In the short break between the first and second part of the concert, two original poems with a Christmas theme were recited by the respective poets themselves, namely Chev. Joe M. Attard and Can. Joseph Meilak.

The second part included a selection of Christmas carols ranging from Maltese, Italian, Latin, English to Ukrainian compositions. The orchestration of these carols for choir, soloists and orchestra were made by Mro Galea himself. The Junior Section gave a very sentimental interpretation of the famous Maltese carol Ninni La Tibkis Izjed and later joined the adult section of the Choir in interpreting Adeste Fidelis with the participation of soloist Noel Galea. Mario Portelli interpreted Silent Night whereas Joseph Aquilina sang The Lord's Prayer. Yvonne Galea brought to an end the concert with an emotional interpretation of O Holy Night accompanied by the Choir which was honoured by a standing ovation by the audience present. earlier the Choir sang Hark The Herald Angels Sing and the impressive Ukrainian Bells.

The evening's compere was Charles Abela Mizzi who animated the concert with fitting comments and information about the pieces being presented. At the end of the concert, as a bonus to all present, the Chorus Urbanus interpreted a rousing Hallelujah form Handel's Messiah. The audience present continued the tradition linked with this musical piece by assisting this famous chorus standing. This colossal Hallelujah brought to and end this memorable concert amongst long, warm applauses. A souvenir booklet was prepared by Mark Sagona and Noel Galea specifically for this occasion.

This concert was marking the beginning of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of the Chorus Urbanus which will reach their climax during December 2005. St. George's Basilica was the place where the Choir was born and within which it grew in stature and quality as one of the best choral groups in Malta. This memorable concert, held specifically in the same place where the Choir was formed strongly confirmed the Chorus Urbanus as the leading local choir.

The superlative comments received by the Choir members for the Concert were innumerable. The satisfaction shown by the audience present for having had the occasion to hear once again the Chorus Urbanus sing  in its rightful place was very evident indeed. The hope of everyone present was and still is that this occasions will be followed by similar ones in the future.
