The Chorus Urbanus animated the sacred liturgy during a Thanksgiving Mass in honour of Chev. Canon George Bezzina on Thursday 1st November 2007, at 6.00pm at the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart in Fontana. During the liturgical service the Choir sang various motets and the Missa Brevis by Abbe’ Boyer. The service ended by the performance of the Antiphon to the Sacred Heart composed by Vincenzo Ciappara. After the Mass the choir paraded itself on the main altar and took a photo with Dun Gorg. Afterwards the members of the choir were invited to share a dinner celebration with Dun Gorg at Palazzo Margherita in Sannat. During the dinner, a special memento was given to Canon George Bezzina. Rev. Fr. Lino Vella, the new chaplain was also present together with other well-wishers desirous to thank Fr. Bezzina for his sterling service along these years.

Canon Bezzina has served as parish priest of Fontana for these last 16 years. It is with special affection that we remember ‘Dun Gorg’ as the priest who showed us unconditional solidarity at a time when the Chorus Urbanus was elbowed out of St. George’s Basilica, and found itself orphaned of its rightful home. The Sacred Heart of Jesus full of love for those suffering from troubled times and injustices, was indeed a shelter of consolation to one and all. At the time we could not understand the cruel twists of adversity that were taking place but when we look back today, we realize that this had served us better…as we were given the genuine chance to offer our services to promote and make manifest this caring love that emanates from the Sacred Heart of Jesus, through an evangelical project – the oratorio ‘Il-Qalb ta’ Kristu’ that was personally commissioned by Canon George Bezzina as a fitting commemoration of the Fontana Centenary Celebrations. 

The Chorus Urbanus is indeed grateful to Canon George Bezzina for his caring love and pastoral aspirations. His charismatic preaching coming straight from the heart will be cherished by all for a long time to come.  Canon Bezzina has now been offered a highly responsible job as financial controller at the Gozo Curia, a post that shows the sound reputation that he enjoys within the diocese of Gozo.
