The Chorus Urbanus joined
forces with the Sheffield University
Wind Orchestra and held two concerts,
one at St Augustine's Church in Victoria
(Gozo) on the 17th March 2008 and the
other one at Bormla's Parish Church on
18th March 2008. These concerts were
held on the initiative of Dr. Simon Mercieca, Head of the Mediterranean
Institute, University of Malta. The Gozo concert
was held in collaboration with the Gozo
Cultural Council.
The concert opened with
Copland's rousing Fanfare for the
Common Man by the Orchestra followed
by Overture for Harmonie Op.24 by
Mendelssohn and Tim Jackson's
Passacaglia. It was Chorus Urbanus'
turn to take the limelight. The Choir
performed a cappella four pieces
with a deeply religious theme, taken
from the Choir's repertoire of sacred
music for the Holy Week. The Choir first
interpreted John Galea's sublime O
Salutaris Hostia followed by
Vexilla Regis. The next piece
featured Yvonne Galea. solo soprano
accompanied a cappella by the Choir for
the John Galea's Crux Fidelis.
Improperia featuring Noel Galea,
solo bass, accompanied by the Choir was
the last piece performed by the Chorus
Urbanus which was under the musical
direction of Mro. John Galea.
Hymn to the Fallen,
by John Williams saw the Choir and
Orchestra combine to give an excellent
performance of this sublime musical
composition which was written for the
epic movie, Saving Private Ryan.
The blend of voices and orchestra was
highly appreciated by the numerous
audiences that attended both concerts.
The Orchestra performed a
couple of other pieces, namely Time
Remembered by Philip Sparke and
the Forest of Arden by George Lloyd.
In Bormla, members of the Sheffield
University Wind Orchestra performed a
number of solo vocal pieces accompanied
by the same orchestra.

Present among the
audience were President Emeritus Dr Ugo
Mifsud Bonnici, the Italian Ambassador
and various other distinct guests who
all had words of praise for the high
quality of the concert as a whole, but
also to the professional quality of the
Chorus Urbanus who were impeccable
throughout their performance.
At the end of the
concerts, the two musical directors
exchanged cd recordings of their groups
as mementos for this successful joint
project.
