The
news of the demise of Mgr. Salv Borg,
Archpriest Emeritus of St. George's
Basilica was received with great sadness
by the Chorus Urbanus. Mgr. Borg passed
away peacefully on Thursday, 27th
September 2007, at about 1.45pm
comforted by his family and friends. Mro.
John Galea paid him a visit in hospital
on the day of his death little knowing
that he had already passed away towards
the Eternal Father less than half an
hour before his arrival in the
respective ward at St. Luke's Hospital.
Mgr. Salv Borg served as Archpriest of
St. George's Parish
between 1986 and 1997, during which tenure, the Chorus Urbanus served unstintingly and
unfailingly as the principal resident
choir of the Basilica. Mgr. Borg had
also accompanied Chorus Urbanus, way
back in 1990, on their choral tour to
the Vatican. During this tour the Choir
had the opportunity to sing during the
Papal Audience in Pope Paul VI
Auditorium and afterwards, together with
Mgr Borg and H.E. Dr. Alexander Cachia
Zammit, had a very close private
audience with Pope John Paul II.
The demise of Mgr Borg is a big loss to
his family and his friends, to the
Chorus Urbanus, St George's Parish as
well as to the whole Gozo Diocese. He
will be fondly remembered for his
charismatic approach and keen sense of
fraternal community that he instilled at
St. George’s Parish and in all Victoria,
and indeed throughout the diocese, where
he was instrumental in curbing the ugly
head of division and intense
parochialism.
