The Chorus Urbanus was invited by the Gozo Cultural Council to perform this
year's official Republic Day
Concert. The concert was held at the Exhibition Hall at the Ministry for Gozo on
Saturday 13th December 2008 at 18.45hrs and was presided by H.E. Dr Edward
Fenech Adami, President of Malta. Attendance for the concert was strictly by official invitation.
The Minister for Gozo, the Bishop of Gozo. Mgr. Mario Grech, various MPs, a number of mayors and a host of
distinguished guests attended the concert. It is to be noted that this was the
last Republic Day Ceremony presided by Dr Fenech Adami since a new President
will have to be sworn in by 4th April 2009.
The Choir performed a varied programme, the first part of which was totally
dedicated to pieces from operas as well as other recent ones. The Choir
performed Giovani Liete from Le Nozze di Figaro, Fortune Rote
from Carmina Burana, Pacem in Maribus, Vivaldi's Gloria,
and Coro dei Schiavi from Nabucco. The second part of the
concert was wholly dedicated to Christmas carols including Jesus Joy, While
Shepherds .., Ding Dong, Ukrainian Bells Carol and Adeste Fidelis.
In his short speech, Dr Fenech Adami showered praise on the choir's
performance and on its achievements in the local cultural sphere. He encouraged
others to follow on the Chorus Urbanus' steps and continue to propagate the
already rich cultural tradition that Malta, and particularly Gozo, possess.
After the concert, the choir members were invited for a reception hosted by
the President. During the reception, the members had the occasion to meet with
Dr Fenech Adami and exchange Christmas greetings with him and had the time to
speak about the experience of his presidency which will end this coming April.
