symphonic concert with the king's own band

The Chorus Urbanus together with the King's Own Band during the Concert

For the second successive year, the Chorus Urbanus has once again joined forces with the King's Own Band of Valletta for the latter's Annual Concert that is held every year in October. This year's concert was held at the Catholic Institute in Floriana on the 12th October 2008 at 6.30pm.

By means of this concert, the King's Own band was commemorating its 134th Anniversary from its establishment as well as the 96th Year since the winning of the award for the Highest Grade of Excellence in Algiers in 1912. The programme opened with Alfred Farrugia's Ceremonial Suite  folloed by Norma - Variazione per Clarinetto by Vincenzo Bellini with the participation of soloist Joseph Caruana. The first part of the programme ended with a suite by Etienne Spiteri, Oasi Park.

The second part opened with Prelusio Atto III from Lohebgrin by Richard Wagner followed by the Intermezzo from Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini. After this musical piece, it was the time for Chorus Urbanus to join with the Band on stage to present the famous choir form Verdi's Nabucco. This piece, a favourite with so many classical music enthusiasts, was received with long applauses by the audience present. The concert then ended with a rare choral presentation of Tchaikovsky's Overture Solennelle 1812. This overture opened with a delicate intervention a quattro voci in Russian by the Chorus Urbanus which added to the solemnity of these beautiful first bars of the overture. The Choir then rejoined the band at the finale of this masterpiece, who together with the ceremonious chimes of the bells and the solemn blasts of the cannon shots brought this memorable concert to a rousing climax.

Omaggio alla King's Own  by F. Gobet and the National Hymn brought this memorable evening to an end. During this concert, the King's Own Band and the Chorus Urbanus were under the direction of Mro. John Galea, who, incidentally, is the director of both these musical entities.
