Can. Joseph Gauci was born on the 24th October 1941 and
received his education at the Gozo Lyceum and at the Sacred Heart Seminary.
During 1965 he was ordained into priesthood by H.L. Mgr. Joseph Pace and
celebrated his First Solemn Mass at St. George's Basilica on 2nd May 1965
During the years 1967-73 he held the post of Prefect of Studies at the Gozo
Seminary and Diocesan Chaplain to the Zghazagh Haddiema Nsara movement.
During 1970, he was appointed Vice-Chaplain at St. George’s Basilica. He
worked in earnest for the foundation, consolidation and development of the Chorus
Urbanus as the official resident choir at the Basilica. As a matter of
fact, the choir sang during Christmas 1972 and after a stop for a short period,
the choir was inaugurated officially on Christmas Eve 1975. As the musical
director of the Chorus Urbanus, Fr. Gauci led the choir on its first choral trip
abroad, the first of its kind for a local vocal ensemble. He directed musical
services with resouding success at the Duomo di Milano and at St. John Lateran
in Rome. Both performances were excellently received by the respective
congregations.
The years spanning 1976-1990 have also seen Fr. Joseph Gauci intensely active
as the first Canon Theologian of St. George’s Collegiate Chapter. At present he is carrying out pastoral work with the Franciscan Sisters of
the Sacred Heart, concentrating mainly on the spirituality of their founder
Mother Margherita DeBrincat. He is also the Disciplinary Prefect at the Minor
Seminary, Victoria.
Along the years Father Joseph Gauci has organised intensive research about
St. George in the cultural and artistic spheres. This research has resulted in a
fabulous collection of material related to St. George, the patron saint of Gozo,
and the publication of numerous articles both locally and abroad.
