Vatican (1990)

The Chorus Urbanus with His Holiness Pope John Paul II

In 1990, the Chorus Urbanus went for a choral tour in Rome and the Vatican, an event which without any doubt left an indelible mark in the Choir's history and which served as a catalyst to make huge leaps in quality and experience. The Vatican Tour during August of 1990 saw the Choir singing in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome during a High Mass celebrated on the Feast of our Saviour (06.08.90). Earlier, the Choir had also the occasion of singing in the Roman Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso on 05.08.90.

However the climax of this choral tour was reached during the Pope’s audience with an immense crowd which filled Aula Nervi. The Choir was the guest choir with other choirs from around the world which regaled the audience present some of its best a cappella pieces from its repertoire. His Holiness’ favourable comment at the end of the audience were ample proof of the excellent impression the Choir left on all present. This tour took place only 3 months after His Holiness the Pope had visited Malta for the first time earlier in May 1990. His wonderful memories of his pastoral visit in Malta were expressed by him to the choir members after the audience. During this tour, the Chorus Urbanus was accompanied by the Archpriest of St George's Basilica, Mgr. Salv Borg.
