Ho Chi Minh - VIETNAM
My recent VISIT to
Ho Chi Minh City
Here are some of the popular hotels in Ho Chi Minh City.
However, if you want to travel cheap and still enjoy the facilities and convenience offered by the City Central, then the budget hotels in the vicinity of Pham Ngu Lao Street will be the best bet.
The nearby streets such as De Tham and Bui Vien are heaven for the foreign back packers, as there are lots and lots of bargain goods as well as delicate foods and drinks to offer. It is a 'MUST VISIT' designation with plentiful of nite life if you visit Ho Chi Minh City.
There are also quite a number of travel agents around this area. Some of the popular ones are Sinh Cafe, Kim Cafe and Saigon Tourist. They organise short tours within the city, around the city, to the outskirt or even to the other provinces. They also have longer tour to Can Tho, Chau Doc, Vung Tau, Dalat, Danang, Hai Phong, Ha Noi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, Hue, Long Hai, Nha Trang, Ninh Binh, Phan Thiet, Phu Quoc or SAPA etc. Charges are reasonable and service are quite OK as tourism is just at the infant stage.
You could also travel to Cambodia through HCM, but you have to apply VISA through the travel agent.
While travelling in Vietnam, certain precautions must be taken to avoid unneccessary trouble.
- Do not show off your wealth such as cash, jewelleries, bangles or pouch etc as motorbike thief may be praying at you.
- Do not give money to baggers as this may cause you more trouble as more may follow you and may spoil your mood of travelling.
- When crossing road, move slowly forward, but never step backward. The vehicles normally will avoid you.
- Do not take the trishaw. Some of these trishaw men are not very honest and may bring you to an obscure place where they can extort more money than they initially ask for.
- Be careful of some small children, normally from the poor provinces. They may try to stick to you and cover your eyes with some newspapers or magazines and very soon you may find your pen or wallet missing.
Other than that generally the Vietnamese are very gentle, polite, helpful and friendly.
The public transport (bus) in HCMC is not very efficient and operating time is normally quite short. You may find taxi or the motorbike taxi (called xe om)are more accessible. The xe om is cheap, fast and a fun way to travel around but it can only carry one to two people at one go. It is more risky and, one more catch, you must be able to withstand the smell of the driver.
