PEPPERED WITH BIRD SHOT
_________

Jean Chailleau Mistook a Chinaman for a Coyote
_________

    Jean Chailleau, a Frenchman who owns a small orchard southwest of town, hunted up Judge Barcroft this morning and told him he had shot a man last night in mistake.  He stated that he was awakened last night at about 11 o'clock by the barking of his dog.  He got up thinking coyotes were about and looking out saw something at which his dog was running.  The object was on all fours and he fired.  A man jumped up and said;
    "What's the matter?"
    Chailleau stated to the Judge that he thought he had shot a Japanese.
    Ah Tye, a Chinaman who works on the Yee Chung place, came into Dr. Byar's office this morning and asked to have some shot taken out of his back.  He was badly peppered with birdshot.  Dr. Byar extracted thirty-six pellets from the Chinaman's back, arms, and legs.  From the angle the shot went into his back, he could not have been on all fours when shot.
    The Chinaman stated that he was walking along the road on the way to the Yee Chung place when a man come out of the house and shot him.
    Chailleau has been joked a good deal by young people who have been in the habit of fixing up "ghosts" for his benefit.  The Chinaman wore a white coat, and it is thought Chailleau got rattled when he saw him.
    The Chinaman swore to a complaint, charging Chilleau with assault with a deadly weapon.
    Mr. Chailleau came to court this afternoon and was admitted to bail in the sum of $250.
