3 dec 2001

final month of 2001. it's been an interesting year, with a lot of phases and mini-epochs for me.

so what did i do this weekend? i guess i saw a lot of jeremy... dave (who is getting his epidemiology ph.d. in cleveland) was out here for the weekend, and he was staying at jeremy and kate's so i headed over there on friday night, and i rented _startup.com_, this documentary about a dot com that takes us through their rise and eventual bust. i thought it was particularly interesting for me and jeremy, two engineers who saw our industries (he's software; i'm hardware) go through that peak and valley in the past few years.

kate was ripping on the two main characters (kaleil and tom) most of the movie, saying they were really arrogant and greedy and self-important bastards. and i would agree... except that i think it's kind of necessary to be that way for them to drive their company to sucess... you kind of need that attitude to get the job done. but they certainly didn't seem endearing, and i thought the story of their eventual fallout (where tom was terminated from the company) was kind of tragic.

it makes me think twice about starting a company with my friends. not that we've been talking about it (we have such diverse skills that i doubt we could pool together for a common goal), but i would hate to see my good friendships torn apart by greed and power struggles. i'd like to think that my friends and i are laid back enough, but you never know... i remember back when jeremy, alan, and i were moving into brenton, and we had a decent amount of tension just figuring out who'd pay what for rent.

saturday night, i took kate and jeremy to vito's, this pizza place in sunnyvale off of lawrence expressway. the only other times i've been there have been with coworkers at vivace, and i just remember the pizza being really good. and it _was_ good, except for when it got cold. we got an extra large pizza, and even with the ravenous appetites of all three of us, the last slice was a bit cold, and had lost much of its orgasmic goodness.

so i finally saw _amelie_. jeremy and dave joined me for the 10:30 showing. when we were buying our tickets, i noticed that the 7:55 showing had sold out. which was kind impressive, and more so when i saw that they were playing it in one of their main (large) theaters. and the 10:30 showing was packed! we had to sit on the side, and my seat was right against the wall.

it was a cute movie, with little outtakes and flip-out sequences that showed that there was a lot of freedom and creativity from the writers. one thing that impressed me most was the use of nudity and sex. usually, in american movies, that stuff is used to titillate... like we drool when we see boobs on screen and stuff. but here, the sex is very candid, and used simply as another tool in furthering the script... the shots of naked bodies goes by without any fanfare or mental foreplay, and i dig that. it just shows that the french don't think much about sex, and it's simply a part of their lives and in their storytelling.

the movie made me wish i understood the language, though, because i am pretty much convinced that subtitles do no justice in translating the original dialogue. there were some parts where speech flew by so fast that the captions seemed like they couldn't keep up.

oh, and today i watched the dvd of _final fantasy_. all i can say is that it was a good _attempt_ at a near-live-action photorealistic movie. but it's still aways from being compelling. i dunno. for some reason, even though this movie effort seemed more visually difficult than _shrek_ or _monsters_, it was not as convincing. by convincing, i mean that i noticed (in this movie) the shortcomings of the animation (than the other movies.) maybe it's because this movie was based on humans, and humans are still a lot more difficult to animate that donkeys or ogres or furry monsters. also, i think that the script gave me more time to concentrate on the animation, rather than the quippy funny dialogue of the other movies... i just had a lot of time to watch the characters' movements and how they were UN-lifelike.

but anyways, those were the three movies i saw over the past few days. i don't usually rent stuff, but i figured that i'd try to pass some time by watching some stuff.

sunday, jeremy and i helped rainbow move into her new place in menlo park. she's got an awful lot of shit for one person, especially since the room she's moving into is so small... i have no idea how she's going to fit all that stuff into her allotted space. but the house is pretty cool... the neighborhood where she lives has some pretty rad fancy houses.

we were kind of hungry, so we hit the arby's on el camino... now i haven't had arby's in years, so i was literally drooling over just the thought of a beef n' cheddar. and i was raving about the arby's sauce to both the guys the whole time. when i got there, i took a little squeeze bottle of the sauce, and squeezed out a line on my finger, and slurped it up. *yum*

i am currently addicted to the video of pink's new song, something like "get the party started." she's just so spunky! i saw the "mtv: diary" edition with pink, and she seems really endearing. i think she's had a hard life growing up, with two parents who never got along, so that makes me respect her more. i dunno. i like her attitude, and even though she's not drop-dead hot or anything, i find her oddly attractive.

i had dinner with will tonight. i picked him up from teralogic, and we both got these huge "dos manos" (two hands) burritos at baja fresh. shit. i wanted to talk about something in our conversation, but i forget what. argh. *shrug* but anyways, i'm glad william is happy; that's all i'm going to say about that. i just hope he's getting some sleep. *wink*

so i have what i hope is my final interview tomorrow (caspian)... at the ungodly hour of 8:30 in the morning... AND it's in milpitas, which means i'll have to brave the morning commute traffic along the 237... hopefully it'll be reverse commute or something, but either way... that's pretty damn early.

finally, sorry to
rita and amms for their recent corporate developments. i wish them luck on their future jobs. i find it strange that of the little lucy's clique that has worked for companies (rita, amms, adam, me, and even bill), all of us have been forced out of work at some point recently.
