John Kay - Heretics & Privateers (2001)

In my 24 years with CHMR, I have witnessed an unsettling decline in the art of song writing. The basic foundations of our social consiousness is often generated by our exposure to Popular Culture, of which music is a cornerstone. However, video oriented, self centered, beat driven, Teenie Pop that can't seem to reach any deeper than "I want", really has shaken my faith in the social consiousness of the music industry!

Thankfully, John Kay with his latest CD "Heretic's & Privateer's", has done much to repair the damage caused by over exposure to mainstream radios fixation with Teenie Pop. Beautifully written, well crafted, and lyrically impressive, "Heretic's & Privateer's" grab's you by the short hairs and reminds you that there's more to living than what popular culture tries to force feed you! (Alot More)

Born of the blues, John Kay has always had an edge to his writing as seen in his work with Steppenwolf, but "Heretic's & Privateer's" brings it to a new level. From the pure honesty and simple joy of The Women in my Life, to the pride and defiance of I Will Not be Denied John shares a lifetime of experience. From the sardonic tongue in cheek tone of "Endless Commercial", to the ominous undertones of Sleep With One Eye Open, John explores the human condition as only he can, and shares it with us through his music.

Heretics & Privateers is a rare gift. A visit with an old friend, and a window into the soul of a good man. John Kay has given us something we may not see again for a long time. He has given us a piece of himself, hope for the future, and a reminder that theres more to music than I Want.
