BrainFreeze!: Behind the Scenes

A typical tape day…

… is more like a typical tape week.  Ryan, if he’s lucky, has heard from prospective contestants wanting to be a part of the show, and he’ll contact those who we’d like to have playing on the program.  The weekend before the Tuesday taping, he consults with Jay on game material and cranks out that week’s questions.

On Tuesday, Ryan and Mike meet together at 4 pm at CHMR, to review game material, set up the studio, and make sure all the microphones and sound effects are good to go.

At 5 pm, our four players for that week’s show will arrive.  After a short briefing, refreshing them on how to play the game and finding out what insane team name they’ve come up with, we start recording.  By 6 pm, a winner has been declared, prizes have been given out and the contestants have left.

On Wednesday we do edits if necessary (our shows are shot “live on tape” on the Tuesday) to get the show ready for the Thursday broadcast.  Then on Friday, we start all over again…

So who are these people, anyway?

We have a few people on staff that help make the show go as smoothly as it does… here’s a little bit about them.

(Producer/Announcer)

MICHAEL ROSSITER is a long time CHMR staffer.  He’s currently the program director at the station, which means he’s a busy little beaver most of the time.  As far as on air programming goes, he’s involved with the Monday morning morning show, as well as “The Reporter’s Notebook” and “Campus Call-In” on Wednesday.  And he just celebrated birthday number (*mumble*) but frankly he tells us that he’s feeling just fine.  We could tell you about his other radio ventures… but then we’d have to dispose of you.  And you really wouldn’t like that, would you?

(Technical Assistance)

NEIL POWER does a lot of important things at CHMR… the least of which includes “The going to Hell Show” and acting as CHMR’s webmaster, keeping this well oiled machine going.

(Game Material Writer)

JAY LEWIS hails from Southwestern New Brunswick and is the face who (unfortunately!) we don’t get to see at CHMR.  He writes material and passes it along to Ryan.  Jay is a big game show fan, having a wide collection of game show memorabilia.  His “netgame” creation, “Net Price is Right” is very popular amongst the online game show community, and he’s got a wicked sense of humour to boot.

(Host, Game Material Writer, “Contestant Coordinator”)

RYAN VICKERS is truly a game show nut.  He is a lifelong fan, who has had the opportunity to see “Wheel of Fortune”, “The Price is Right” and the UK version of “Weakest Link” in person, amongst others.  He’s also tried out for Wheel, “Win Ben Stein’s Money”, and along with many other Canadians spent (ok, “blew”) $25 three summers ago trying to beat the phone game for the Canadian version of “Who wants to be a millionaire”.  He finds it hard to believe that he didn’t think of the idea of doing a game show on CHMR (it was Mike’s idea), but he’s loving every minute of it.
