Getting Started
At the beggining of the game you will see 2 options. "New Game" and "Options".
Click on new game to start and an intro to welcome you to the world of Pokemon
will begin. You will then be asked to "Set The Time". Select the hour (left
picture), then confirm it. Select the minute, then also confirm it.
Throughout the game, the set-up process especially, you will often be asked to
confirm your selection with a screen like the one above . Remember, the Japanese
word on top means "Yes" and the one at the bottom means "No".
To begin the game, choose your name. The menu shows "New Name" with which you
must input your name or make up a name for you self, or choose from any of the
given names(these names are from the silver version) - "Silver", "Kamon", "Tooru"
or "Masao". However, that in the Gold Version, the names are different - they
are "Gold", "Hiroki", "Tetsuo" and "Takashi".
The game starts, the first thing you do is log on your PC.
You go downstairs and your mother asks you what day it is; do what she says.
Then you bid her farewell, tell her you'll take good card of yourself and you
set off on your journey.
When you exit, you'll find yourself in Wabaka Town.
Before you set off, these are what you should know about the game's menu system:
"Back-Pack" - This is where your items will be stored for.
"PokeGear" - Check on time or make calls (the screen below shows "call home")
"Your Data" - Check your ID number, your available money, logged time and gym
leaders and badges.
"Report" - Your status and to save your game.
"Options" - To adjust message speed, etc.
"Exit" - To exit menu system.
Your Starting Pokemon
Choose your starting Pokemon from Professor Utsugi. There's Hinoarashi(a fire
pokemon, one of my favorite), Waninoko(a water pokemon, I recommend this one),
and Chicolita(a leaf pokemon). Then when you're all set, confirm your choice.
Prof. Utsugi will now explain to you that the machine in this lab is connected
to the Pokemon Centre healing machine. You can now heal your pokemon right in
his lab. You walk out and his assistant gives you a healing potion. What you
must do now is go to Prof. Oak and bring back the egg that was discovered to
Prof. Utsugi for research. This is what your menu should have in it now:
You now have Pokemon on your menu system.
You also have Porfessor Oak's phone number in your memory dial.
The statistics of your Pokemon are categorised in 3 different pages.
Exploring New Places
You are now ready to explore the town. There will be random battles to encounter
and you can either choose fight the pokemon, capture it, or run. In the battle
screen below, the top, green bar you have indicates your HP while the bottom bar
indicates your experience. Once the experience bar is full, your level increases
by one level.
To safeguard your Pokemon from fainting, you can equip it with a potion. To do
so, go to Pokemon in your menu, select which Pokemon you'd like to have equipped
and simply do so. Only then will your Pokemon automatically regain HP during a
battle. Remember, you will still not be able to catch any Pokemon until you get
your first 5 Pokeballs from Prof.Utsugi's assistant.
There are many places to explore and things to do now. Head left through "ROUTE
29" to "YOSHINO CITY OF WAKABA TOWN" and have your Pokemon healed. Should you
talk to the old man standing near the Pokemon Center will give you a short tour
and a "TOWN MAP". Next, head north through "ROUTE 30" to "KIKYOU TOWN" where
Prof. Oak is. The first PokeGym is also here. Prof. Oak gives you the egg and a
Pokedex and then he leaves for Kogane City's radio tower. You stay the night,
heal your Pokemon and go on your way. As you step out of Prof. Oak's lab, your
phone rings. It's Prof. Utsugi asking you to hurry back because something
terrible has happened.
Back At the Lab
You give Prof. Utsugi the egg that Prof. Oak has handed to you. As you head on
out, Prof. Utsugi's assistant gives you some instructions and hands over 5
Pokeballs which you keep in your backpack. With Prof. Utsugi's assistant's
instructions, you go in search for the girl you just fought on your way back
here. Apparently, she has stolen a Pokemon from the Utsugi Research Lab.
As you move west, you will meet a boy who will teach you how to catch Pokemon.
Please, select "No" or when he tries to teach you how to catch a pokemon, the
game kinda freezes. There is an new feature in Pokemon Gold and Silver which
wasn't present in the other Pokemon games. Notice the Pokeball icon next to the
Pokemon's name (in the picture on the right) This indicates that you have
already got this Pokemon in your Pokedex.
Moving On
Now head north and gain more experience points and money by battling the many
Pokemon Trainers along the way. You'll even exchange telephone numbers with a
boy called Gorou, a Rattata fan. Your next stop, "KURAYAMI-MOUNTAIN CAVE" on
"ROUTE 31". You can't go through it yet as it's pitch dark. So wait till you get
HM 5 (Flash).
Next Stop
"KIKYOU GYM" where you will meet "HAYATO" who only has Pidgey and Pidgeotto and
they're only level 7-11. Beat Hayato and get a "WING BADGE".
Replenish
To the left of the gym is a Poke Shop. Replenish your PokeBalls (as shown below)
and get more potions and antidotes for your journey. Here's what this store
sells:
PokeBall $200
Potion $300
Escape Rope $550
Antidote $100
Paralyse Heal $200
Awakening $250
X Defend $550
X Attack $500
X Speed $350
Flower Pattern Mail $50
Evolving
At this point in the game, your first pokemon should have evolved. Hinoarashi
(Fire) evolves at Level 14.
Kikyou City
Out of the Gym, after you've healed your Pokemon and bought some potion and
antidote replenishments, head to the PokeCenter and speak to the guy standing at
the counter. He'll present you with an egg. This is a mystery egg which will be
yours to keep and hatch. Next, go left to "KONTA HOUSE", there, a little boy
will trade you Onix you don't have to trade. "Tower Of Madatsubomi" (Tower of
Bellsprout) is your next destination. Fight your way to the top and you'll get
"HM05" Flash.
Back In Wakaba Town
When you are in Wakaba Town keep walking towards the left until there's a very
green tree. Then, go back a few steps to the right. Go down and there's a house.
Go through the house and you should find to caves. Go inside the first cave,
talk to the woman and there should be a table with two pieces of paper. One of
them is a puzzle. Solve the puzzle. The solved puzzle should look like a kabuto.
After you solve the puzzle you should hear a sound. If you don't hear it,
something got to be wrong. After when you solve the puzzle you will be
transported to the second cave where there are ghost pokemon. Then go up the
ladder and it should lead you out of that cave. Go down, turn to the right. Go
through the house. Then, go down and the guy should let you go through. If you
didn't receive the egg from the guy in the pokemon center, you can't go through.
By around this time, the egg you have been carrying will hatch into a Togepy.
Go Fishing
Now travel along "ROUTE 32" and enter the Pokemon Centrer. In there is a
fisherman. Talk to him and he'll give you a fishing rod. Take it . It'll be in
your backpack. Do some fishing. Next stop, Tsunagari no Doukutsu (Cave of
Relention). This cave takes you out to "ROUTE 33". Towards the end of the cave,
don't forget to take the ladder down and get "WAZA(TM) 39" and "DEFFENDER".
Hiwada Town
"ROUTE 33" leads to "HIWADA TOWN" - Home of Gantetsu the maker of various types
of Pokeballs. Visit him and he'll ask you to save the town's Slowpokes which are
being held captive by Team Rocket. "YADON no IDO" (Slowpoke's Well) entrance is
now open for you to battle it out with Team Rocket. You win! Gantetsu
congratulates you, meets you back home and presents you with a Lure Ball. "YADON
no IDO" which is now Slowpoke's Well was previously the den of Team Rocket 3
years ago.
Gym #2
The Gym Leader here is TSUKUSHI and she uses a Kakuna( Kakuna knows tackle so
don't think it can't attack, same goes to Metapod), Metapod and Scyther. Beat
Tsukushi of the Bug Gym and you'll get HM 49 which is "REZENZOKUGERI" (it's a
slash attack), the ability to use CUT and the ability to control Pokemon up to
level 30. You now also have the "INSECT BADGE." As you proceed west after
replenishing your health and potions, you'll meet with you rival again. Beat her
and proceed left for a FarFetche'd.
Get "Cut"
FarFetche'd will be in "UBAME no MOR" (UBAME'S FOREST). You'll meet it, it'll
fly away again and again until it is cornered. Once you've got him cornered, a
police officer will give you HM 01 - CUT. Teach it to one of your pokemon, and
use it to cut your way out of the forest; head north. Explore the forest for TM
02, the go north-west and get TM 12 at the house.
Kogame City
This is a big city to explore. Kogame City is where there's a "BIKE SHOP" for
you to get a bicycle. There's even a big "POKEMON SHOP" with lots of floors to
explore and things to buy. Before you leave however, don't forget to buy a drink
at the top floor. At "RADIO TOWER", enter and talk to the lady in green on the
right. She'll ask you a series of 5 questions and if you get them right, you'll
be able to access radio from your Pokegear. The answers to the questions were...
Yes... Yes... Yes... No...Yes... No.
"UNDERGROUND TUNNEL" is where you'll find the coin purse for the slot machine
game.
South of the city is a house with an old man and an old woman. Go inside the
house. Then, talk to the old man and give him a female Pokemon. Then, talk to
the old woman and give her a male Pokemon. Come back in about an hour or two and
the old man will give you an egg for you to hatch. You'll have to pay the couple
for their services if you want your two pokemons back, but the pokegg is free!
If you see the old man outside then it means that the man has the egg ready for
you to hatch. If you don't see him outside, you'll have to wait longer.
Kogame City - Gym #3
"AKANE" is the Gym Leader here. You'll fight Clefairy and MilkTank. MilkTank is
one "flirtatious" Pokemon. If the Pokemon you choose to battle against her is
male, she'll try to "charm" him so he won't attack her. MilkTank also has a milk
potion that enables her to heal herself should her HP get low, and has an attack
strong enough to knock out your pokemon in on hit, so try to get your pokemon
over lv. 23 when facing her. Beat Akane and she refuses to part with her Regular
Badge which allows you to use Strength. One of her team members will, however,
persuade her into giving it to you, talk to the Gym leader again. She gives you
the badge this time, she also gives you TM 45 which is "Mellow Mellow". Out of
the gym, turn right and enter a house with the flower lady. Talk to her and
she'll give you some Squirtle Ointment (Kizu Kusuri) which you'll need later.
Enju City
"UTSUKII" - That's the plant Pokemon that you'll have to fight to clear a path.
If you like, you may also catch it for your party. Apparently, Utsukii is rare
and hard to find. Can be rather powerful too( lv 20). You can only fight Utsukii
if you use the Squirtle Ointment that was given to you. Best if you save the
game first because you'll only meet him once. After you've defeated or caught
Utsukii, go right and talk to a man who will give you TM08. This TM 08 will
enable you to crack rocks (this means that you'll be able to get rid of crack
rocks on the ground using TM08. Somewhere along the way, you'll come across a
"NATURE PARK". Depending on the day you're there, you may or may not get to take
part in the Bug Catcher's Tournament. Tournament days are Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Saturdays. To take part in this, when you see the guy on the side of the
"house", talk to him and then you'll end up outside. Walk around in the grass.
You now will be able to find rare grass pokemon in the park. The tournament is
like the Safari Zone game in the Red and Blue version. If you hadn't talk to the
guy and you were walking in the grass, you just find pidgeys and caterpies; at
night you'll find hoo-hoos.
Now, you may want to revitalize your Pokemon. Go to the PokeCenter and you'll
meet your rival again. No fighting. You'll both have a brief chat and then he'll
leave. The house on the left of the PokeCentre has an "ITEM FINDER" for you to
pick up. In the house that's above the PokeCentre is a place where there are
many Kabuki dancing girls, each with their own evolution of Eevee - Jolteon,
Vaporeon, Flareon and the 2 new "black" and "silver" evolution for the Gold and
Silver versions - #196 EFUI, or #197 BURAKKI. Fight all the girls and on your
way out and pick up HM 03 - SURF from the man at the exit. At the temple in the
north-west part of this town, you'll meet your rival again. Beat your rival,
teach your Pokemon with HM08 and you can break the rocks that are in your way.
Fall down the hole in the middle of the room and you'll get to the bottom where
you'll see 3 Pokemon statues come to life. The 3 Pokemon will then jump away.
These 3 pokemon are rare(#242,#243,and #244). They're like Zados, Articunno, and
Moltres in the Red and Blue version. You won't be able to fight them as statues
so you can't save the game before battling. You only can meet them randomly.
Note: At the bottom, there are 2 pokeballs which you won't be able to take yet.
Next step is the 4th Gym.
4th Gym
MATSUBA is the Gym Leader here. This is one tricky gym. is a little bit hard to
get in. Use the pillars and the trainers as your markers and you'll be able to
find your way into where Matsuba is. Once there, beat all his ghost Pokemon and
get yourself the Phantom Badge. You'll also get TM 30 - Shadow Ball and get to
control Pokemon with levels up to 50.
Asagi City
Before you've gotten here, there's a place with tall grass right before you
enter the city, and when you left the city with the Phatom badge. Walk around in
those tall grass and you might be able to find 2 of the rare pokemon. Don't try
to find them until you've got all 8 badges. You'll find the last one in the tall
grass near the breeding center. In the house next to the PokeCenter, there is a
man that will give you HM04 - Strength. Go up to the top of the light house. You
will see MIKAN, the Gym Leader. She isn't feeling too well and is therefore not
in her gym. She asks for some medication. Now head west of the city and you'll
see three boulders. Now go down and surf to Taban City.
Surf To Taban City
Next, equip yourself with SURF and swim west. TABAN CITY is your next
destination. There is not much to see and do here. The Gym Leader is SHIJIMA. In
the gym, there are boulders that you must move to get to him so equip yourself
with STRENGTH. Beat Shijima and you'll get TM 01 - Explosive Punch. You'll also
be able to control Pokemon up to level 70. You've now earned the SHOCK BADGE.
Before you leave, don't forget to talk to the lady outside the gym for HM 02 -
FLY. Now... swim back to ASAGI CITY.
Back In Asagi City
Back in Asagi City the first thing you do in enter a tall building. Make your
way to the top. Talk to a girl and she's the gym leader. She wasn't there
because she was sick. now that you have the medicine she is fine. go back to gym
and beat her(she uses Magnetmites, Magnetons and the evolved form of Onix. When
you beat her you'll get TM 23 - Iron Tail. You'll also get the STEEL BADGE. Head
east now and you'll see a fat man. Fight him and several other rivals to level
up.
Choju Town
You won't be able to enter the gym just yet. Head north. You'll see a red
Gyrados which you can either beat or capture( save the game first because I
recommend that you capture this red Gyarados; there's only one of it). Come out
of the water and go to the sign. You'll see Lance and chat with him before he
takes off. You'll meet him at the shop now. Talk to him and he'll open up a
trapdoor for you. This is the Team Rocket hideout. Fight at the first level...
then make your way down where you'll meet Lance again. He'll heal your Pokemon.
Lots to see and do and many Team Rocket to fight. Be sure to go everywhere.
Check computers, bookshelves.. and pick up all the Pokeballs. Go upstairs...
downstairs... explore... and open the first electronic door to the Team Rocket
Boss. Defeat him, talk to the bird and get a password. Open the door to the
reactor now that you have the password. Fight all the Electrodes and when you're
done, you'll get HM 06 -Whirl Pool. Next stop is the gym.
Meet Yanagi
This is the Ice Gym. Meet Yanagi. Beware the ice that's slippery and will try to
push you away from him. Defeat Yanagi and you'll get HM 16 - Numbing Wind.
You'll also earn an ICE BADGE.
Ice Cave
The Ice Cave is next and here, you'll save several mini-puzzles to solve. The
second puzzle's the hardest. This is the answer:
Next is to push the boulders into the holes on the floor. Then go down and go up
to a new town. Don't forget to get HM07 - WaterFall. You'll need it.
Fusube City
This is where the 8th Gym is but you won't be able to enter it just yet. Heal
your Pokemon, equip yourself with HM 02 - Fly, if you haven't already. And then
fly back to Radio City Tower. The man at the top of Radio City Tower will give
you a key after you beat him. With this key, you can now open the door at the
underground tunnel, which was previously locked. Go through the passageway,
fight team rocket, unlock the iron doors (it's a random combination, very hard
to solve), go upstairs and save the man who has been trapped. He will reward you
with a KEY CARD. You come out at the shop.
Back At Radio City Tower
Now you can enter the part of Radio City Tower which was previously blocked.
Keep going up till you find the male and female bosses of Team Rocket. Beat them
and the town will be rid of the rest of 'em as well. Now, you're all set for the
8th and final Gym. 8th Gym - Dragon Gym - Ibuki is waiting for you. This isn't
an easy gym, there's stairs to climb and boulders to move before you reach the
gym leader. You beat Ibuki but she doesn't give you your badge. Apparently, she
has lost it. Next surf to the cave behind the gym. Equip yourself with HM-07
Whirlwind and then eliminate the little whirlpool to find the Pokeball. Pick up
the Pokeball and Ibuki comes to present you with your final badge. From here on,
you have 2 choices. Either go back to Wakaba Town for the Pokemon League. While
you're there, don't forget to take your MasterBall from Prof. Utsugi. Or go to
Enju City where the Legendary Bird HouHou is(HouHou takes the place of Mewtwo in
Red and Blue). In Pokemon Silver, Legendary Bird Lugia(same with HouHou) is in
the set of caves to the west of Taban City. You only have one chance to catch
either so be careful and if you like, save before the battle. To get the rarest
pokemon in gold and silver, Serebii, type in this code:01FBDFD0 in your
gameshark.
