Chasing Gavin
What's in the box?
T'was a little boy's birthday,
One early Tuesday morn',
Surprises wait for that special little boy,
Stored away in boxes, either big or small.
"What's in the box?" the little boy asked,
As he peered upon the table below;
A tiny blue package stood out among the others,
For its little yellow spots and a bow.
The little boy walked to the table to see
What the small package has inside,
He tossed it and turned it and shook it with care,
Wondering what's the mystery the box had to hide!
It jingles and jangles and it clatters and clicks,
It shakes like a rattle and it could roll as it flips!
The little boy listened and listened real true,
But the sounds from the box are nothing more but clues!
He stopped shaking the package and listened once more,
He laid it on the table and peered through the door.
"Nobody's looking, it's quiet outside."
Whispered the little boy with delight in his eyes!
He stared at the box for a minute or so,
"I guess it wouldn't hurt if I might want to know..."
So he checked the small package from its bottom to its top,
He pulled the long ribbon as the box gave a "pop!"
The little boy had his hands over his eyes,
Surprised to hear the sudden burst from the box!
He peered through his fingers and was surprised at the sight,
"It's jack-in-the-box!" he said with all his might!
"What's in the box?" the little boy asked,
As he peered upon the table below;
Another package stood out among the rest,
It was red in color with stars on its bow!
He looked left and looked right to see if someone's around,
"Nobody would bother!" the little boy cried.
He pushed it away, and shoved it with care,
Marveling what's the obscurity the box has inside!
He turned it and flipped and watched it shake and roll,
It shuddered upon the table and bounced like a ball!
It went jiggering and quavering unlike the jack-in-the-box,
That jingles and jangles as it bangs at the top!
The little boy placed his hand on the box,
He giggled and chortled upon feeling its ticklish clatter.
He sensed the soft "puff!" from its slightly open top,
That the tiny box gives when one tips its cover!
"It's burning! It's flaming! The box is on fire!"
The little boy sniveled, with alarm in his eyes!
But after some time the clouds disappeared,
The little boy stopped crying, afraid, as he may seem.
"I think it's okay," the little boy said,
"It's no longer shaking and the clouds have fled."
So he pulled off the ribbon with his shaking little hand,
His heart leapt from excitement he could no longer stand!
The box gave a shudder; the boy stepped aside,
He wondered and thought about what was inside.
Then smoke rose once more from an imaginary flare...
The top flipped open as a rocket zoomed in the air!
It whizzed and whooshed and sped through the air,
It fluffed up blue smoke, as it plummeted here and there!
"Wow!" cried the little boy as he stood up in awe,
Admiring the toy rocket as it landed on the floor.
"What's in the box?" the little boy asked,
As he peered upon the table below;
One more package looked different from the rest,
It was white in color with holes on its walls!
The package looked plain and simple and clear,
It had no ornaments and ribbons nor wrappers in green,
T'was all plain and white with holes on its walls,
"Whatever's inside it, I would wonder no more"
So the little boy left, but not long after that,
The package gave a quick tremble like t'was ready to spat!
The boy turned around only to see,
The tiny box wobbling like it wanted to flee!
The boy raised his eyebrows in sudden suspicion,
"How could it shake and wobble when it's all on its own?"
Thus he inched to the box to look through the holes,
Hoping to unravel the mystery hidden behind the walls.
He looked inside the box, and he gazed and stared,
He waited just to see what the package has got.
Not long after that, the box began to whimper,
But then the boy wondered why the carton stared back!
The little boy gasped from what he had seen,
"If the box isn't alive, then why has it seen me?"
So he looked some more but before he could stutter,
The box licked him on one cheek, and then once more in the other!
"The box just licked me!" the little boy said.
He doubted one moment, "Just how can that be?"
He wiped his cheeks and mumbled aloud,
"I want to know what's in the box and there's only one way to find out!"
He stepped one arm away from the mystery box,
Closing one eye, he slowly reached for its top.
He flipped the box open only to see,
That the thing inside the box was a little brown puppy!
The puppy leapt towards him and licked him on his ears,
As the little boy smiled and chuckled with glee!
They danced and skipped and hopped and ran,
Their happiness and delight never seem to end!
T'was a little boy's birthday,
One early Tuesday morn',
Surprises await for that special little boy,
Stored away in boxes, be it big or small.
"What's in the box?" the little boy asked,
As he peered upon the table below;
He opened the boxes to unravel the mystery,
That the packages would soon bestow.
