Marjorie Hogan Welch died at the family home in Port Townsend Dec. 10. She was 70.

Born May 31, 1917, at Powell River, B.C., she was the daughter of Gerald Hogan and Lita LaVeta DeBruier Hogan. She attended Broadway and Roosevelt High Schools in Seattle, graduating from Roosevelt in 1936; she also attended the Evergreen State College in 1980.

She was employed by the Seattle Association of Creditmen (1937-38) and during the years surrounding WWII was employed as an executive secretary for Seattle Steel Corp. She married Joseph A. Welch in 1947 and moved to Port Townsend. From 1975-79 she was the co-owner and operator of Country Gardens, a kitchen and gift shop on Water Street. Mr. Welch died in 1979.

She was a co-founder of the Dr. Francis J. Delaney Orthopedic Auxiliary, was active in the Hospital Guild, Trees for Port Townsend, and served as a trustee for the Trees Maintenance fund. She was a founder of the Port Townsend Duplicate Bridge Club and a member of the American Contract Bridge League, participating in tournament play throughout the West Coast. In 1973 she achieved the status of Life Master, the A.C.B.L.'s highest rating.

She is survived by a brother Richard Hogan of Seattle; her son (private), and daughter (private). The family suggests memorials to the Friends of the Library Building Fund, 1220 Lawrence St.

A memorial service is scheduled Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. in Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend.
