| Returning from the Tar River on Johannah's road going west, we find ourselves back at its intersection with the Scart-Shanbally road. Remains of the Shanbally Castle estate walls can be seen in front of a modern house. Below the window farthest to the left, there is a nitch in the wall. It is actually a stile (stone steps built into a wall so that people could climb over it), and it is there so that people could go over the wall to get to a well they believed to be a holy well. This particular well was believed to cure eye diseases and was visited by many at Easter time. |
