Our Ancestral Home, p. 2
This is the Scart-Shanbally Road going north, the western border of Scart East, built by Viscount Lismore to separate his demesne in Scart West from Scart East. To get to this point, you travel west on the Ballyporeen road from Clogheen Town for one mile. You will come to an intersection in the townland of Shanrahan. An intersection in Ireland is called a "cross", and this one was known as Hogan's Cross. Most locals today, however, refer to it as Shanrahan Cross. At Shanrahan Cross, turn right. This road is called the Bella road. Follow it for 9/10 mile and turn right. Go a few tenths of a mile. You are now at the spot pictured above on the road which Viscount Lismore built through tenants' farms. The land on the left side of this road became part of Shanbally Castle demesne; the land on the right side of the road is Scart East. Just beyond the telephone pole on the right is the road which leads to the spot where Johannah Hogan's house once stood.
This is the right turn off of the Scart-Shanbally road just past the telephone pole shown above, heading east, which leads shortly to Johannah Hogan's parcel at 5Bb. The road is lined with hedgerows so high that often the fields behind them cannot be seen. If you follow the road a few tenths of a mile east to the first bend, you will come to the triangular field in which Johanna Hogan's house once stood.
