Captain Mike Steele was the leader of Chalk One along with Lieutenant Larry Perino. Taking heavy fire, Steele and his chalk were pinned down about 50 yards away from the rest of the men. Under his chalk was Corporal Smith. Also, Lieutenant Jim Lechner was under his command, and he was critically injured. Steele, was constantly pressuring Harrell to get them a rescue convoy, with no luck until that early morning. Steele suffered many injured in his unit, but was a true leader keeping order at their perimeter.
