Webelo Scouts from Pack 99/Den 4

Walked off trail with a measuring wheel to determine distances between bridges, roads, and the soccer field. This information was put on a chart to be included with publications of the tour of the tour book. Reflectors were nailed to both sides of trees within boardwalks, leaving nails loose to allow for tree growth. The areas around the reflectors were painted for greater visibility. BOTH COMPLETED December 2000

This project consists of the preparation of a self guided tour book for the Township portions of the trail. Half the cost of this project was paid for by a grant from the state. The illustrations were done by Jack Lyons, the Townships’ part time Draftsman. Brad Wertheim has installed some of the posts and Rory Papp will install the remaining posts required to mark the trail points.
The guide book is available in print in the Township Hall. It is also available, along with an expanded teachers version, is available at the Township Website.

Adoption of Gold Meadow for 2003

Painting Initials on Boardwalks & Bluebird boxes

Painted the initials on the ends of various boardwalks an individual to give credit to the scouts who built them and to key into the self guided tour map. She also built and installed several bluebird boxes near Gateshead Drive. She was the first individual volunteer. June 2001 |
Mulch Between the Boardwalks in Trail Segment #3 South

There were many areas with exposed large roots. The roots presented tripping hazards and traffic damaged the roots. Other areas had puddles or low spots that should were filled. These areas mulched with gravel. October 2001 |
Alliance Bridge
| Washington Valley Trail Alliance | This 46' bridge (64' including the ramps) is the longest bridge in the trail system. It was constructed between November 2001 and October 2002 by the Alliance with the help of two days of heavy equipment time donated by Vollers Excavating. Several Eagle Scouts also volunteered to help out. |
Removal of Down Trees Near Alliance Bridge
| Washington Valley Trail Alliance | Downstream from the newly constructed Alliance Bridge three smaller trees on top of an old naturally fallen tree were cut up and removed. The old tree was trimmed where it rotting branches overhung the brook but most of it was allowed to remain. The trunks of the three trees will be used to build a low wall. |
Gift Bridge
| Washington Valley Trail Alliance | Located between Alliance Bridge and Patrick's easterly bridge there is a small drainage. This project consisted of a 16-foot bridge to cross this area. |
2002 Photo Contest

The girls organized the first photo contest in 2002. They publicized for the contest, arranged for judges, obtained prizes, and oversaw the entire contest. The winners of the various categories had their photos framed and displayed at the Somerset County - Bridgewater Library. |
Signage, Weather Sealing, & Weeding of Gold Meadow 2003
| Cadet Scout Troop 229 | The girls took on the maintenance of Gold Meadow for a year, during which they weather sealed all the posts and benches, pulled out weeds, made and installed new plant identification signs, and put in slates on the path. |
