MEDIUM CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Suitable for groups of older children with adult supervision and adults

 1) Sundial.  This project consists of an oversize sundial with an informational sign explaining how and why it works. Sundial would have a diameter of about six feet. The gnomon must have the same degree as our latitude and must point to true north. Check http://sundials.org (includes sundial sites to visit)& http://sundials.co.uk (has good instructions and examples for beginners) for additional information. The site must have a good exposure to the full arch of the summer sun. A good location may be near the basketball court of Chimney Rock Park. The sundial should be constructed of concrete. The gnomon should be precast, set into place and then the dial poured around it. When completed a write up explaining the design and function of the sundial must be provided for addition to the Township website. The project may also include a display next to the sundial explaining how it works and how to read it. ASSIGNED to JAMES FABREGAS, TROOP 154

 2) Buffer for Trail Segments 2 & 3 North.  This project consists of installing plantings along the northern side of trail between Mt. Vernon and the easterly side of Curia lot, except the utility easement area. The buffers should be: evergreen, native, and low maintenance.

   AVAILABLE NOW

 3) Replanting of areas of Gold Meadow. This project consists of replanting areas of Gold Meadow that did not flourish and removal of field grass where it threatens to choke out the plantings.

   AVAILABLE NOW

 4) Alliance Bridge Plantings. This project involves planting three trees to replace those that were removed in order to install the abutments for the bridge. Also several bushes should be planted to screen the abutments.

   AVAILABLE NOW

 5) Low Retaining Wall Near Alliance Bridge. At the end of the southern ramp to Alliance Bridge there is a low area that the trail must cross while turning to the west. This area is too wet to handle traffic and can be dangerous if left. A low retaining wall made from logs will be built and the area filled with stone. A NJDEP permit has been issued for this work. ACTIVE - WASHINGTON VALLEY TRAIL ALLIANCE

6) Parallelogram Bridge in Trail Segment 6. A 6x6 type construction bridge near the beginning of the brush East of Tullo Road. This swale crosses the trail at an angle and requires the timbers to be skewed to match. No handrails required as the bridge will be low to the ground.

    ASSIGNED TO CASEY COLGAN

7) Extend Handrails at the Top of Drew's Stairs. Extend the handrails of Drew's stairs to include the top platform.

    AVAILABLE NOW

8)Log Edging Near Tullo Road. We have had a chronic problem with people driving onto the field between Gold Meadow and the trail westerly from Tullo Road. This project consists of moving logs from a pile near Tullo Road, skinning off remaining bark and branches, and placing them along the edge of the gravel path leading to Mike's Bridge.

    ASSIGNED TO CASEY COLGAN

9)Ramps for NJIT Bridge. NJIT will be constructing a timber frame bridge in the summer of 2004, however this does not include the ramps. This project consists of building those ramps.

AVAILABLE AFTER NJIT BRIDGE IS COMPLETE

10)Flying Disk Golf Course Markers and Rules Sign. This project consists of designing and installing signs for each tee showing the number, par, distance, and diagram of each "hole" (posts for each were installed during the construction of the course by Kevin Ozolins). At the first tee a sign with the layout of the entire course and the general rules of the sport will be needed. The rules sign should provide information on how to get more information on line. This sign should be placed close, but not at, the first tee. A bench for waiting groups can be included.

ASSIGNED to JAMES FABREGAS, TROOP 154

11)Replacement of the Purple Martin House at Chimney Rock Park. The pole supporting the purple martin house near the back of Chimney Rock Park failed. The house needs to be replaced, and installed on a new pole located out in the field area
