MAINTENANCE PROJECTS

1) Purple Martin House Maintenance. The purple martin colony boxes should be closed during the winter and opened just prior to the purple martins returning to this area. Once the boxes have been occupied, they may need to be cleaned out when they are closed for the winter. Only boxes that are badly soiled, are wet, or contain dead birds will need to be cleaned. Until the colony is established the boxes should remain closed until May 1 each year when the young adults who establish new colonies arrive each year. Once established, the boxes should be opened by April 1 when the adults arrive. This project must be done every year.

2) Brook and Trail Trash Clean Up.  There is trash near storm sewer outfalls near Plymouth Road, and we suspect other roads. This material should be picked up and either recycled or bagged for trash. This material is lightweight and has been washed downstream from residential areas. Any trash noticed along the trail should also be removed.

3) Weeding of Gold Meadow. Gold Meadow will require weeding for several years. Aggressive plants may have to be removed until the selected plants have become established, for example, thistle has invaded the east end of the meadow. The rule with this weeding, do not rip it out - unless you are sure it is a species to be removed. (First weeding, thistle, Completed by JOHN SHIVE July 2001, the second by BOY SCOUT TROOP 88 June 2002 the third plus new signs and weather sealing of posts by CADET GIRL SCOUT TROOP 229)AVAILABLE NOW for 2004

4) Trim the Apple Tree Near Mount Vernon Road. There is an apple tree about two hundred feet east of Mount Vernon Road on the south side of the trail. This tree is in need of someone to give it TLC. Dead limbs should be trimmed away and growth from surrounding thickets should be cut back. Also some grass seed should be used to provide ground cover. ASSIGNED TO CHIP MILLS
