Kamala Markandaya

Kamala Markandaya (1924-2004) was born in Mysore and had her education in Madras. She forms one of the first in the generation of women Indian writers in English.

She worked as a journalist and then in the army. Just after Independence, she left for England, married an Englishman there, and lived there ever since.

Kamala Markandaya's forte lies in creating realistic and poignant stories of both rural and urban India. The central theme in her works has been the indomitable human spirit (usually her protagonists are women) in the face of changing political and social conditions, and other forces beyond one's control.
