Interviews
Miss Utah USA - Soben R. Huon

When did you start doing pageants and how many other ones have you done?
I started doing pageants actually in November when I was asked to do Miss Utah USA. Its actually my first state pageant. I did Miss Cambodian American when I was a senior in High School and it wasnt recognized at the state level. It was just a community effort put together to recognized beautiful Cambodian women in the community.

As an Asian American do you feel any pressure or is not something you think about?
You know what, I have gotten a lot of support from the Asian American community. And I love it and its really encouraging because they want me to do so well. And yes there is a lot of pressure and I do get e-mails threatening me that I have to do well to represent them. But Im just excited to be able to represent the whole USA in general.

Who do you think is your fiercest competitor?
Thats a good question, I think a lot of it is just me. Youre taught that your fiercest competitor is yourself and your own emotional self. You cant in this type of competition, you will die if you compare yourself to other girls. You wont survive. You have to know the beautiful qualities within you and just play that out. I think thats the best way to describe it because once you start looking at other girls and you know, Oh My Gosh, she has thinner thighs than me or she has beautiful hair. It gets to you, so you cant really think like that.

So what do you think is your biggest strength?
My strength is having the ability to stay out of the gossip. Not be critical of other girls because once youre critical of other girls, thats when it kills you. Thats when your emotions start getting into it and youre not really focused on whats important. I truly believe that and its critical to this competition.

So what made you join the Miss Utah USA pageant?
I was just working at Nordstroms accessories and a lady came up to me because shes had daughters who joined. She said You should try doing this beauty pageant that was coming up. I heard they needed girls. So I really looked into it and I signed up for it and Im so glad I did.

Tell me something about yourself that no one has asked that you really want people to know.
I really want people to know that Im out here and its so important for me to do my best. If I dont win the title, I know I can take my own Utah title as far as I can. And I just want to use it as a vehicle to put myself in a better place in the state. Im willing to work for it, Im willing to work hard at it. Were out here, we have strenuous schedules. Were up at 6:30 to get ready for breakfast at 7:30. We dont get back til 11 and that was yesterdays schedule. Its all exciting and yet at the same time its all really hard. I know that as Miss USA thats what youll be doing. All that complaining and all that whining to supervisors or anybody else, thats just setting you up for disappointments if you win Miss USA. So I really want everyone to know that Im willing to work for it.

What makes you blush?
I smile along the street, a random smile. And of course I have the sash so people say hi. So when I meet people without the sash and the simple acknowledgment, that should make anybody blush.

I asked her another question about 3 changes she would make to her state if she was Governor of Utah, but it was honestly just something I had to throw out there because no one was stopping the interview. I want to thank Miss Utah USA for enduring my first interview. I hope it wasnt too painful.
