After many months of intense interviews and selection, the undisputed
TV ambassador for Singapore's English television, Gurmit Singh, was chosen
to host Singapore Idol. Gurmit is one of Channel 5's most recognizable
faces. He has transcended a myriad of roles in his career as a MediaCorp
artiste. Having hosted his own talk show, played the mischievous prankster
in Gurmit's Small Talk, and crossed language barriers on a Channel 8 drama
series, Gurmit has established himself as a household name. He is of course,
best remembered as local icon Phua Chu Kang, in Channel 5's blockbuster
sitcom of the same name, that has aired outside of Singapore.
PCK Private Limited has won also won several regional awards including
three wins by Gurmit for Best Comedy Actor at the Asian Television Awards (1998, 1999 and 2002).
Singapore Idol, Singapore's first blockbuster programme will also be
Gurmit's first, " I'm very excited to be selected by Channel 5 to be the
Singapore Idol's host! I look forward to being 'big brother' to the young
aspiring contestants. Singapore Idol is going to be BIG with the right ingredients
and with our very own local flavour!"
