A
fascinating photographic exhibition exploring China’s recent social,
economic and political history opens at Discovery Museum this week.
Maoism
to McDonaldism looks at the contradictions between communism and the free
market in China and opens at Discovery Museum on 30 January 2002.
The
exhibition examines the effect on China of Mao
Ze Dong's philosophy of freeing
the Chinese from the constraints of money, profit, consumerism and
inequalities to the introduction of the free market and the arrival of
western multinational companies.
The
exhibition is a series of black and white photographs illustrating life in
modern China created by Chinese artist, Lip Lee.
It challenges the audience to question what the future holds for
China's 1.2 billion people.
Lip
Lee, artist said:
“The photographs I took for
the Maoism to McDonaldism exhibition show the relationship between the old
China and the new influences of consumerism. China introduced the
capitalist system without altering its political system resulting in an
economic boom for the last twenty years.
The rush for wealth and modernism has resulted in rising crime,
unemployment, falling family and moral values and Westernisation.”
A
series of activities are being held alongside the exhibition in the
People’s Gallery to coincide with Chinese New Year.
