| As a minister, I have the privilege to go to many church members' and friends' birthday parties. Whether a Red Egg and Ginger baby party or the 80th, 90th, 95th, or 100th birthday party, it is always festive with many smiling faces and congratulatory remarks. At baby parties, I see healthy and chubby babies with small hands and fingers looking so cute and lovable. Birthday parties of seniors are also lovely -- the beaming birthday person with face creased with years of experience and wisdom, being honored and loved is a beautiful sight. It is good to celebrate one's birthday, to affirm the job of living and to acknowledge our Creator as the Giver and sustainer of life. Our church will celebrate its 127th birthday on Sunday, October15. It is God's grace that our church can continue to minister in this community for 127 years. This is no small accomplishment. Many have made sacrifices in order for our church to survive and thrive. God knows who they are and will reward them accordingly. The life cycle of a church is very similar to that of a human being. It has its beginning, its growth into maturity, and then its decline. Unlike human beings, however, a church can go through many cycles of this birth (rebirth) - growth - decline process. Undoubtedly, our church has gone through many cycles of life. The ups and downs, the good times and the bad, the challenges great or small, through all these critical junctures, our church has persevered and survived. Faithful members have contributed their talents, time, and financial resources to make this church possible. Through difficult times, they did not give up. It is this spirit of perseverance that has kept the church alive so that many can call it their spiritual home. Many have come to give and/or to receive. Many have fond memories. While many have moved on to other places and occasionally come back to worship, their roots are still here, and CCC is still their spiritual home. Throughout the years, the leaders and members have tried their best to make this chjurch into the best that it could be. Even with the limitation of its locations ("a hard to find parking place"), the church has continued its mission to glority God, to witness of the Good News, and to minister to people in need. For example, one of the highlights of the summer project was the "Eyes to See" project. We collected over 300 pairs of eyeglasses and sent them to our denomination, which will then channel these eyeglasses to those who need a pair to see. A church is also denoted by strong fellowship among its people. This year's church picnic showed an aspect of the strength of fellowship. Over 120 people came out to enjoy the day. I saw different age groups gathering around. The youth, the young adults, the adults, senior adults and families were well represented. Though our church is not a large church, it encompassed all age groups. this is a pretty healthy sign of a good and solid church as we march into the 21st century. With this let me wish our church a happy birthdya Happy Birthday, Chinese Congregational Church |
