What is a chinchilla? And why should I care about a fat squirrel, or an oversized rat?
Ok, here's the short story. Chinchillas come from the Andes Mountains in South Africa. They were hunted almost to extinction because of their soft fur. Some breeder saved the LAST TWELVE CHINCHILLAS IN THE WORLD!!!!, and well, bred them.
Chinchillas are actually rodents, and if you have ever picked one up, you'll see that a chin is actually very small, it's just packed with fur (80 hairs per folicle, which is a lot.) It's really no bigger than a squirrel. In fact, it's more like a squirrel than a rabbit.

Colour mutations are not actual mutations, but breeding certain chinchillas to create different coloured chins. I wouldn't suggest trying to breed your chin, because of the LETHAL FACTOR!!! Here's a link to a site that describes it all...
