| Temperature Temperature is very important for the health of your chinchilla. If they should become overly hot, it could lead to heat stroke. Average temps. Should range anywhere from as low as 40 degrees to a maximum of 80 degrees. Humidity levels should also be kept low. The higher the humidity, the more dust baths they will require. Keep in mind chinchillas come from a very dry & mild climate! Air conditioning is a must during summer months ! Heat Strokes Poor air flow excessive heat, bright sunlight and lack of water can cause heat strokes.Chinchillas don't sweat like we do and so cannot cool their bodies quickly, there fore the air about them much be cooled. Temperatures above 75 F can be fatal cool the animal immediately and cool the air. Air conditioners/coolers are the best, but if only a fan is available make sure that there is a constant flow of cool air, otherwise you will only be circulating the already hot air in the room. Placing blocks of ice in bowls around the room will also help to cool the air. If your chinchilla appears to be too hot, try a damp, cool cloth around his ears which will look very pink and try giving water. In severe cases it may be necessary to dip the chin in water - tepid not cold, then wrap in a towel. Life Span Life Span - Chinchillas can live anywhere from 15- 20 years . So this is something you want to consider before buying one. Exercise Exercise is also needed for healthy chinchillas . Make sure the room is safe & chin-proof ( same as you would baby-proof) Anything within reach, they will chew it! |
