Today was medical exam day for the babies. One
station checked her weight (8.8 kgs = about 17.5 pounds)
, height, and temp. Her temperature was normal, but I didn't look
quick enough to see the height. Another station
checked hearing - she passed, but she has a lot of wax in each
ear. Eye tracking - passed, and throat - fine. The
final stop was with the doctor - he listened to her chest,
back, and stomach. He measured the circumference of her
head, and checked her arms and and legs. All seemed to
be fine. He wrote something in Chinese and said,
"Thank you! You go now!" So with a screaming naked
baby in one arm and her diaper and clothes in the
other I left the room.
We then returned to our room and Olivia (who we have
been calling Shunnie) took a three hour nap. While she
slept I had the paperwork session to attend, so Roger
stayed with her. When I returned they were not in the
room. I went down to the playroom, which is furnished
with toys from Mattel Toy Company, and there they were
playing up a storm! The minute she saw me it was over
for Daddy! The grouchy alligator face returned!
We then went to eat at a place called Lucy's. Western
food! You can't imagine how good a grilled cheese
sandwich and fries tasted! Almost like home! Roger
had grilled ham and cheese with fries and Shunnie had
steamed eggs and fries (her favorite next to apple
juice). After dinner we did a little shopping. We
bought three Chinese dresses and five pairs of shoes for just
under $30.00. The humidity is killing us though as none of
the stores were air conditioned. We decided we had
enough for one day and returned to our place on the
26th floor!
Bath, bottle, a little playing and off to bed and
asleep by 8:30pm. She sleeps really well through the
night, so far. Some of the girls are either not sleeping much
or are having night terrors three to four times a night.
We found out that our girls were in some way tethered
to their cribs during the night at the orphanage. Some have what
look like bruises on their ankles and others have
these marks on their wrists. Shunnie has small ones
around her ankles. Also, the ratio of nannies to
babies was less than what we were led to believe.
This is the only orphanage in the BengBu area and
it is a very poor orphanage.
Thank goodness we were chosen to bring her home! We
are so grateful to China for allowing us to love and
adopt one of their precious angels!
I guess that is enough for now. Tomorrow we are going
to a Buddhist Temple. There we can have the babies
blessed by the monks. Shunnie will receive her
blessing there. After that it is more shopping at the jade
factory and maybe some pearls! Run Roger Run, really
fast with the money! :-)
Much love from China,
Roger, Ranata, and Shunnie |
