Part 64- War Through Kowloon
When I met up with Jun later, he saw I was soaked as he said,
"What happened?"
"I was caught in the rain."
Aya sighed heavily, peeling off his coat while his dress shirt clung to him in every way possible. I saw Akio raise an eyebrow as Jo leaned back against the sofa to get a better look. Toki just sat on the sofa beside Aya and watched with a content smirk on his face. Aoki noticed those three oogling Aya and quickly took off his trench coat and wrapped it around Aya's slender frame. Aya looked up slightly surprised as he said,
"What about you?"
"I'll be fine. You're soaked not me."
Aya put his arms through the sleeves see the coat was huge on him as Aoki walked around, smacking Toki on the side of his head lightly as Toki winced and rubbed his head as Akio and Jo quickly turned to another direction. Aya smoothed back his hair as I ringed mine out, now regretting having it so long. I started to shiver from the cool air from inside and the fact that I was soaked through every layer of clothing I had. I took it though and didn't say a word as Tai and Jia came downstairs and saw us.
"You two okay?"
We both nodded as Jia said,
"How many went after you?"
"Five." I said,
"How many are dead?"
"Three." Said Aya.
Jia looked at Tai as he said,
"Kaoru probably has more."
"We need to find out who would dare work for Kaoru."
"What about the former Teo Chiu?" Said Jo.
Jia looked over at him as he said,
"You have a point."
He shifted his glance back to Tai as he said,
"You think they could have something to do with this? Remaining Black Hand maybe?"
Tai nodded as he said,
"I'm not ruling anything out."
Jia stretched his arms up over his head for a moment as he said,
"Someone see if they can contact the Yuuki twins. Mikkie, Aya..."
He sighed as he let his arms fall back down naturally as he said,
"You two go home and change. Come back later."
We nodded as Jia turned and took the elevator back upstairs as Aya left with me, saying to Aoki he would come back with his coat soon.
After I went home, changed and came back, I saw the Yuuki twins were there. Tai spoke to them both as they waited for Jia to come downstairs. Both twins looked over as they greeted me in unison. I bowed my head slightly, returning the greeting as Jia and Toki came from the elevator.
"Good evening Jia-sama." They both said.
"Do you two do that on purpose or does it just happen?"
"What?" They spoke again.
"That..nevermind. What did you two find out?"
"Kaoru is somewhere in Kowloon." Said Yasuhiro.
"Interesting. Isn't that the Red Light District?"
"His business is there. We haven't located his home yet." Said Toshihiro.
Jia sighed as he said,
"It's a start. What's with the weather?"
"Common." Said Toshihiro.
Jia turned to the few of us sitting in the lobby. Jo, Toki, Jun and myself sat waiting for orders. I noticed our oyabun looked at me and hesitated on sending me back out. I wasn't hurt so I didn't know why he doubted me for a moment. Eventually he checked his watch and said,
"Jo, go find your partner and go back to work. Mikkie, Jun you too. Toki...you're not doing anything anyway so you can stay with me."
Jun and I got up as he grabbed an umbrella from beside the door and opened it once we stepped outside. I checked my watch once we were outside, seeing it was close to three in the morning. Jun and I kept walking for a while until we saw a cab and we stopped to hail it. We headed up to Kowloon.
The run down, whore infested area, was still up and about as if it was three in the afternoon. Many people walked around, in and out of bars and whore houses or sex shops. Jun and I walked through, the rain still pouring down on us we looked around, hit up people for information and waited. Around four, as the rain finally let up and everyone began going towards the cover of darkness Jun and I called it a night. We took the subway back to our own apartments and I went home to sleep.
The search for Kaoru proved to be a difficult one. He was well hidden and with people from all over that either didn't care or didn't know of Jia's hold over the country, working for Kaoru, it made it all the more difficult. We were in Hong Kong for a month, facing random gun fights, fist fights and brawls so much so that Jia forbad Toki to go out into Kowloon anymore. Toki, Aoki and Akio were the main source from where Kaoru's people drew anger from. On more then one occasion, Toki came back, nearly escaping arrest as he was covered in scratches from broken bottles and bruises on his arms, hands and sometimes his face. The main source of his anger was the fact that he was just easily angered. It didn't take too much to set Toki off and most of the time, making him mad was like setting off an atom bomb, the explosion, the aftershock and the final conclusion were all horrible to watch mostly because when Toki was mad, he grabbed whatever happened to be in his hands as a weapon. Which was how he cut up his hands from breaking so many glass bottles. Aoki was slightly more different. His anger came from being pushed too far. He didn't like having his personal space invaded, he didn't like when people got too close to his face, he didn't like being provoked into fights so sometimes it was difficult to even get a reaction. What often set Aoki off was Aya and anyone near him not taking no for an answer. Though Aya was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, Aoki more often then not was there, ready to put a bullet in someone's temple for getting too close to his seiai. Akio was more prone to anger if he was just treated incorrectly. Akio was use to people falling over themselves to make him even look in their general direction. Rudeness was not tolerated. Jia didn't mind them drawing out Kaoru's people with hopes of dragging Kaoru out himself, but he didn't want anyone getting arrested either. So unless the situation called for it, the trio were now allowed to go back into Tsim Sha Tsui. Meanwhile the rest of us traveled in and out of the borough waiting for Kaoru to move again. Jia dealt with him on a business level battling out all the property Jia was loosing hold of. Apparently, Kaoru had a government connection that could over rule or look the other way if Kaoru wanted something. The right money and a good promise went a long way. That pissed Jia off because Kaoru had one advantage he didn't so he was quickly loosing footing in Hong Kong. Nothing Jia could do at this point could keep his land because he had not even had his business up for very long. It was not a huge operation like the ones in Tokyo or New York and allies and good connections were few and scarce. Jia worried.
Tai, Gabriel, Aya and Akio worked quickly to figure something out, even calling in Furukawa's advice. The Kitsune offered one piece of sound advice, saying Jia should buy up what he could and quickly. Left with no other option, Jia did that and began buying out smaller companies to make his company grow. He was now playing monopoly and he couldn't loose. Kaoru began to feel the sting of Jia's backlash and anytime Jia's employees were sent out, fights and gang wars bled through the streets of Victoria. Jia had advised us to be careful and to not go out if we didn't need to. We paused on looking for Kaoru in the mean time as Jia waged business wars against him.
In the middle of the following month, as I grew tired of constantly working through nights and watching my back as well as my partner's, Kaoru finally stepped forward with one big step. The property that Toshimasa had built his casino on was bought up since it was considered worthless. Jia had made a notion to keep the land but Kaoru had his hands on it and would not let go. But Jia, one to never back down from a fight refused to let go. They played tug of war with property as Jia had us backing him up and Kaoru his own government connection. Jia was not worried this time since the Yuuki twins made the best use of themselves yet. They had taken pictures of the government official going through the red light district to get his piece. Once Jia confronted him, threatening to splash the news all over the front pages, the official backed away from Kaoru, no longer able to cut him anymore breaks. Shortly afterwards, the official died, murdered on his way home. Kaoru lost his hold and Jia was able to keep his land. However, whatever Kaoru had gotten during his temporary hold over Jia, Jia was going to battle him out for it.
The next phase of the war came over as all of us began going through Kaoru's businesses, once Jia's and tear it apart and bring it back to us. Like before, it was no easy task. Breaking into businesses was harder to do then breaking into anything else. We had little trouble at first but once the trio was allowed to work, we left nothing but a trail of bodies behind us. Aoki, Toki and Akio didn't bother with paperwork. Akio just told them to bring everything so Toki and Aoki picked up boxes and threw everything in and carried everything outside as Jo waited, packing in boxes of paper in the trunk and back seat. Before long, Kaoru grew angry and kept reappearing. He was angry. The tension in the city was so thick you could shoot through it. Jia sensed it but was not afraid of it. He was not afraid of Kaoru at all. We knew something was over the horizon we were just wondering what it was. Until we knew, we could do nothing but wait.
Then, one night, Jia didn't arrive at the office. Toki did and as far as we knew, they had not fought. Once we realized Jia was absent, Tai asked Toki if they had fought.
"Nah man, Jia tol me to go ahead since he was workin when I left."
It was then that he realized his mistake and he turned and kicked the side of the sofa, going over to it as he lifted it up slightly as he heaved it to the side in his anger as he cursed and shouted.
"Why the fuck did I listen to him?! I NEVA fuckin listen to him!"
Tai sighed as he tried to calm Toki down while Jo and I stood and watched. Tai then said,
"It's not your fault. You didn't know if anything was going to happen."
Toki moved away, too furious a himself for actually leaving Jia on his own. He should have known better and it angered him that he did something like this.
"I shouldn't have fuckin left! What the fuck is wrong with me!?"
Tai immediately took over as he called up everyone else. Before we had a chance to regroup, Toki left on his own. I called Aoki and let him know the situation and sent him to back Toki up. Tai collected the rest of us so we could get our oyabun soon. Hopefully before anything happened.
Once we regrouped, Tai let us all know what happened and soon sent us on our ways into the city to find Jia. We tried calling him first off but got no answer. Aoki called Aya sometime later as he let him know that they had gone back to the apartment Toki and Jia shared to see if maybe they were overreacting but found nothing. There was no sign of struggle so there was a chance Jia was caught on his way to his building. The sky was darkening, though it showed no sign of rain. It was just getting later and soon more of Kaoru's people would crawl out from dark alleys and approach us. Before we let them get to us, we sought them out. With threats and brutal beatings, we managed to get some information from one of Kaoru's employees. I had managed to snap his wrist before he spoke saying that in one of Kaoru's businesses in Tsim Sha Tsui could hold more information then him. We let him go as Jun and I took a cab into the Red Light District and sought out Kaoru's establishment. We called everyone else to let them know what we knew and waited. Pretty soon, Jo, Akio, Aoki and Aya had met up with us. We stood across the street, watching the whorehouse that Kaoru operated out of. It had been quiet, hardly anyone coming out of it which made us wonder why. We broke up into groups and headed inside. Jun and I went through the side, quickly killing the guard there and shoving him aside. We went inside quietly, noticing the area was decked out like a regular household only scantily clad women walked about the area, some smoking others talking as they walked about. Guards of Kaoru's walked around as we grabbed a few and made them tell us were Kaoru was. They pointed upstairs as I shot them, glad I had the silencer on. We continued onwards, going up the stairs and towards the huge manor. Every now and then as I peered over the stairs, I would see one of my associates walking about, they would look up and see me, aiming then going back to work. Jun and I met up with Akio and Jo upstairs as they were going down the hall, guns in hand. We joined up with them as we went to the end of the hall to the large double oak doors. Before we reached them, gun shots echoed out and we all hit the floor, covering our heads as we waited for the shots to seize. Once they did, Akio gestured us to go down one side of the hall as they went to the other side. We continued onwards as the doors suddenly flung open and Toki stood there, gun in hand as he was covered in blood, his face and bangs soaked in it as it stained the blue of his shirt and his jeans. He was holding his nine in one hand and dragging someone along with him in the other. Akio said,
"Is that Kaoru?"
Toki shook his head as he said,
"Nah, his second in command."
Toki turned him over slightly by jerking the collar of the coat back and dropping him to the floor, showing Kaoru's second in command with a perfect bullet wound to his forehead. The rest of his body was riddled with bullet holes as Toki wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he said,
"I know where Li is."
I took a quick look inside the room he was in, seeing it was in a complete disarray and there were bullet holes along the walls complete with blood splatter. Toki sighed as he put his gun in the back of his jeans as he said,
"Let's get the fuck out of hre. I caused enough mayhem."
Akio agreed as he snatched up a towel from inside the room, handing it to Toki as we left.
The information Toki forced out of the second in command let us know that Kaoru was near Victoria's Point. We went there right away, calling Tai and Gabriel along the way to let them know. Once we got the area, Toki got out first, stuffing the towel in one of his huge jean pockets as he wiped his face off with his hand once more, the black cuff on his wrist noticeable as he then tucked his bangs behind his ear. He didn't say anything before he got out of the car. Aoki and Aya got out next since Jo was dropping us off in different areas to regroup there. Jun and I were next as we walked towards the building, watching it, looking out for anyone around. It was dark and there was hardly anyone around since all the businesses had closed for the night. It made me think of the first time the 36 Moons collapsed and the cops ran inside our building, trying to shoot and smoke us out. I worried for Jia's safety and went inside with Jun, hoping to find Jia in one piece. Toki had already gone up alone, not fearing anything since his anger was blinding him and making him go on. Jun and I took the stair well knowing everyone else would follow us or take the elevator up. I checked my gun as we entered and went up the first flight.
