Part 34- Without Reason
It was time to work. I couldn't imagine what was going through Eve's mind returning to Tokyo. Jia had already warned her once and if he had to do it again he would kill her. The last time anyone saw Eve, she had gone back to Osaka and for as long as we know, she had kept herself out of trouble and out of our line of vision. Now she was back. While the business heads sat around, made plans and discussed what to do in case she became a problem, the rest of us went to keep an eye on her. Once we found out she was keeping a residence in the Ginza District most of us parked outside and watched her. For the longest time, lower heads kept telling us, a former Eve Yosei was living in Ginza. However, we couldn't find her for about two days until one night, as we parked outside an apartment building, waiting for the former Miss Yosei to appear, Toki said,
"There she goes."
We all turned and looked up and down the darkening sidewalks as Jo said,
"Who are we lookin for?"
"You'll know it when you see her." I said.
Of course I didn't know where Toki had seen her so I was just as confused. Aoki then said,
"Oh...there she is."
Now I was getting upset because I didn't see her at all. I didn't say so though. As I waited to see her, I noticed a female walking towards a building, dark skinned, not of Asian decent and I thought to myself...that couldn't be her. The Eve I remembered was a female version of Toki. Thugged out in jeans, huge jackets and boots. The woman I saw was in a short skirt, matching jacket and high heeled shoes, her hair styled with rocks in her ears. Toki then said,
"Let's ask her out."
Jo laughed as he said,
"Her? She's.....she's a woman. That's not what I was told."
"She changed Baby. Relax. I'll bring her in."
Aoki stopped Toki as he said,
"Relax. Mikkie, you get her."
"Why me?"
"Because anyone else will try and date her not bring her here."
I sighed, getting out of the car as I adjusted my coat and buttoned the front as I crossed the street and approached her. She stopped once she say me and she threw her cigarette away. She stood up straight like a proper woman, a beautiful Prada coat on her frame and she looked a vision. However, once I stood in front of her, she said,
"Sup yo."
I was not surprised. You can take the girl out of the streets but you can't take the streets out of the girl. I sighed as I said,
"Eve I'm guessing."
"Yeah yo. What up?"
"I came to ask you a couple of questions."
She scoffed in a way that Toki does by sucking her teeth and rolling her eyes as she said,
"Tell Boss man I didn't do nothing. I'm here, mindin mah own business."
"We hear you're with someone else."
"So? That don't mean a damn thing. I'm doin mah thing."
"It doesn't matter. You being here gives us a reason to keep an eye out for you."
She scoffed again as she said,
"Whatever yo."
"I think Jia would like to have a word with you."
"Man.....fine. Whatever."
We both crossed the street as Jo got out and opened the door for her. She paused as she looked at him and said,
"Who you?"
"Akui."
She smiled as she said,
"Well ain't you the cutest thing. How old are you? Eighteen? Nineteen?"
"I'm twenty-four."
"No fuckin way! You look like a baby!"
"So I hear."
She got in the car beside Aoki as I followed her in and shut the door behind me.
"Hey Scary man. Toki, how you been?"
"Chillen. What's with the get up?"
"What? You don't like?"
"Is not you."
She waved a hand at him as Jo started the car and we drove off. As he drove us back to Jia's building she sat up and said,
"We bein chased?"
"No, he just doesn't know how to not speed." Said Toki.
"Hey, what's the baby's real name?"
"Jus call him Baby. Everyone else does."
Jo gave Toki a glare as Toki smirked. Eve smiled again as she said,
"You do look young. Is all good though."
Jo didn't say anything but I could tell that he was annoyed. It's one thing to look young, but another to be constantly told you forever look eighteen. I had the same problem.
Once we arrived at Jia's building, I escorted Eve to Jia's office. Once there, Jia turned in his chair as he saw her and raised an eyebrow as he said,
"Eve?"
"Yeah Boss Man. I hear you wanna see me."
"What happened to you?"
"What you don't like?"
She did a quick turn for him as he said,
"It's different."
"That ain't what I asked."
He shook his head as he said,
"Yeah it's nice."
He gestured her to sit as I said,
"Should I leave Jia?"
"Nah. Wait here Mikkie."
I nodded as I stood by the door and Eve crossed her legs and said,
"You got a smoke?"
"Yeah but I don't have a lighter."
He opened his case for her as she took one and said,
"What you mean you don't got a lighter? What's the matter Boss man? All out of your price range?"
Jia laughed a little as he said,
"Yeah I blew it all on the countries."
She laughed as she took her own lighter out and lit the cigarette as Jia said,
"So...Eve...how are you?"
"Fine. Jus doin mah own thing. Why you wanna see me Boss man? You already had your chance."
Jia laughed as he said,
"Don't flatter yourself."
He moved the ashtray closer to her as he said,
"Who you here with?
"Mah husband."
"So you got married. Fell in love huh?"
"I didn't say all that. I said I'm here with mah husband."
Jia laughed as he said,
"So...why are you here?"
"Just goin through Tokyo is all. Vacation. My husband is Japanese. He hasn't been here since he was like....little so he wanted to come."
"What's he do?"
"He's a business man."
Jia raised an eyebrow as she said,
"What's with the face?"
"I'm a business man."
She sighed as she said,
"Not that kind of business man. He's legit."
"You sure?"
"What's it to you anyway?"
"Just keeping my eyes open is all."
She smoked for a moment before she said,
"I'm sure."
"Okay. Just don't let me catch him making any trouble. I'm tired of dealing with married woman and their husbands who don't know how to shut up and back up when they have to."
She got up as she said,
"Whatever. My husband is legit. You jus better not fuck up an kill him cuz you're so damn paranoid."
She then turned and walked out, passing me along the way. Jia looked at me as he said,
"Bitch."
I said nothing as I excused myself and escorted her out. Of course she complained the whole time she didn't need an escort but I said I was doing my job and saw her out.
The business heads later found out that Eve was either being lied to, or that she lied to Jia.
"He's not legit."
We all stood in Jia's office as he said,
"He's a yakuza from California if you can believe that. He missed out on the problems when we were cleaning up because he was already in Osaka by then."
Jia pulled his hair back as he said,
"So he married Eve, why or for what reasons I don't know. Anything in Osaka was taken care of and I warned the oyabun there to break Eve's contract. I warned anyone that if they dared to employ her there would be hell to pay."
Aya then tucked his hair behind his ear as he said,
"No one did employ her. She just married someone who has the power and also the ignorance of not knowing they couldn't employ her."
Jia nodded as he said,
"So...now we just have to wait and see what this guy wants. And what he's doing here."
It was all we had to do. But we didn't have to wait too long.
I sat with Jun in the lobby one evening. We were about to get up and eat as soon as we agreed on a place. Jun was in the mood for some Italian, I wasn't so we were conflicting on that when the front doors opened with a loud bang. Jun and I got up as we looked over and saw two lower heads had stumbled in. One carrying the other as they both fell to the floor. They were drenched in blood as Jun cursed and started helping the wounded one. The one that was carrying the injured one said,
"We were shot at. Down by Shinjuku, there was four of us. Just me and him managed to get out."
"What about the others?"
"They were killed."
Jun and I looked at each other as he said,
"Let Jia know, I'll tend to this one."
Jun and the injured lower head went down to the basement as I looked at the other head and said,
"You sure the other two are dead?"
"They exploded right in front of me. This isn't all his blood."
He gestured to his suit which was drenched in blood. I saw it was all over and not just the side he was carrying the injured lower head.
"Are you hurt?"
"No...I'm fine."
He hung his head as I looked at him and wondered what to do about him. I called Tai to take care of the problem. Once Tai came down stairs, the lower head explained what happened as Tai then sent him home. Tai then sighed and said,
"Seems that we have a problem."
"I say it's more then a problem."
He nodded as he then said,
"I'll let Jia know. Gather everyone else and look out for this guy."
I did just that so within a few minutes, we were back out in the streets looking around for anyone that would have heard about the Shinjuku shootings. We all had the feeling that Eve and her husband were behind this. And no one could blame us since we did have a rough past with Eve. But then it started getting strange.
As I started getting ready one morning, I turned on he news to see there panic all over Tokyo. There had been random shootings, killings and fires all over the city. Innocent people that were home, in their cars or just exiting from somewhere were being taken down at random. I didn't understand why random people were being killed instead just some of our people. We waited for a few days, seeing what else happened all while still keeping an eye on Eve. We also had to find out who her husband was and what he deal was in coming into Tokyo. Eventually, Akio announced it to the rest of us when we were in the lobby. Aoki and Toki were sitting back, slightly tired since they had actually been working hard like the rest of us. Jo was falling back in his seat, yawning as he reached up and pulled his hair free from the elastic band. Akio left the elevator as he said,
"Andou Daisetsu."
We looked over him as Toki lifted his head up from the sofa as he said,
"Who?"
"Andou Daisetsu. Eve's husband. So Eve is now Eve Andou. Her husband, the legit business man was legit once upon a time. He borrowed money from some syndicate in Cali and unable to pay back he tied in with some other syndicates to get away from it. From what Eirinsu says about this guy, he's deeply troubled."
Aoki sat up as he said,
"What do you mean, troubled?"
Akio shrugged as he said,
"That's what Eirinsu says."
Jo stayed as he was as he said,
"So he's troubled. That can mean anything including him being a psycho killer."
Once Jo said that, suddenly, the random murders made sense.
"He is a psycho."
Everyone looked at me as I got up and excused myself as I went to see Jia.
Upstairs, while Jia conversed with the business heads and Furukawa, I excused myself for interrupting as I said,
"Jia, I just heard about the possibility of Andou's condition."
Jia nodded as he smoked, exhaling and then tapping the cigarette into his ashtray.
"Hai, turns out Eve's husband has some serious problems."
"I thought so. It would make sense with the random killings going on lately."
"That or he's just trying to lure me out. Either way, I can't rule anything out."
I nodded as I said,
"What should we do for now Jia?"
He thought about it for a moment as everyone looked at him. He then said,
"Bring in Eve."
Within a few hours, Mrs. Andou came in, wearing black dress pants a matching coat and a white shirt underneath. She still looked all the lady as she walked in, her heels clicking on the floor as she walked into Jia's office. She put her hands on her hips as Jia stood and said,
"Have a seat."
"Nah, fuck the seat. You better tell me why you had your fucking lackeys pull me from a dinner just to come an talk to your ass. Trust me Jia, you're a good lookin man, but I'm married an frankly, I'm tired of lookin at your face."
"Lookin at you isn't a picnic for me either Eve. Now sit down and shut the fuck up."
Aoki stood beside Eve as he put his hand on her shoulder and shoved her down into a seat. She sat down in a huff as Jia said,
"You talk to me like that again and I'll have you thrown out the nearest window."
Eve crossed her arms as she said,
"Whatever."
Jia then got his cigarette case out as he had Aoki light the cigarette for him as he said,
"Andou Daisetsu huh? Former head in Cali, ran over to Osaka and that's how you met him."
"So you did your homework. Big deal."
"The big deal is that you sat here and lied to me. You told me your husband was legit. I do some digging and find he is my kind of business man. Why'd you lie?"
"If I told you the truth you would have been so suspicious."
"I am even more now! I also found out your darling husband is unstable."
"Where'd you hear that bullshit?"
"From Cali. Heads that knew him before you."
"Daisetsu is fine. There's nothing unstable about him."
"Yeah, like I'm gonna believe a word that comes out of your mouth."
"Daisetsu is fine! He hasn't done anything! He may be as fucked up as you but that's another story!"
"Don't yell at me little girl! If you weren't a woman I'd I had punched the shit out of you already! I put up with your shit once! Don't think because you're rockin Gucci now that I won't be so quick to have you killed regardlessly! Now shut the fuck up!"
Eve got quiet quickly, knowing mouthing off any further to oyabun of the 36 Moons wasn't going to help her cause. She then turned her head away as Jia took a deep breath as he said,
"I have a feeling he may be responsible for all the random deaths going on."
"What are you a cop?"
"No, just someone with enough sense to know my enemies."
She sighed heavily as she said,
"Look Jia, I'm appealing to your reason, you got nothin on my husband. He's been around me most of the time."
"And my reason tells me not to believe a word you say. You lied to me once. You have reason to do it again."
She got up as she said,
"I know you well enough to know that Daisetsu didn't do anything. And if you come near him, don't think I'll be the girl runnin off an hiding."
She turned and left again. Jia then picked up his cell phone as Aoki stood there, me near the doors as Jia called Toki.
"Toki...do me a favor. Mrs. Andou will be storming down into the lobby soon. Make sure she leaves."
He then hung up as Jia sat down at his desk and said,
"It has to be Andou."
Aoki nodded as he said,
"We'll get to work."
Aoki and I excused ourselves and soon left.
We watched the Ginza district and any random murder that happened was looked at all over. Some of our lower heads went down while doing nothing but going home or standing in the subway. We watched our backs for anything that could have happened. Eventually one of the top heads was injured. Akio brought in Jo one night to Jun, Jo wounded by a gun shot. As Jun took off Jo's coat, he said,
"What happened?"
"We got shot at. But the upside to this, is I saw who did it."
We looked at Akio as Jo flinched in pain as sat up straight. Jun then said,
"Go tell someone. I'll take care of Jo."
Akio took one more look at Jo as we both saw he had taken a shot to the shoulder. Any more to the left and it would have killed him. Jun began working quickly as Akio and I went upstairs. We found Toki and Aoki and after Akio finished explaining what he looked like, Aoki and Toki looked at each other as Aoki said,
"We should find this guy easy."
The four of us left as Jo was left to recover in Jun's hands.
We went into Ginza, taking word from lower heads as they told us that Andou himself was around the city somewhere. Eve was still home, causing no trouble. When we received a call from Hisoka, Toki smirked and said,
"What is it about every guy goin to the Kabuki-Cho?"
We quickly caught a cab and left for the Red Light District. As we arrived, we only saw panic had ensued as a fire was blazing from a love hotel. We got out of the cab as Aoki paid the fare and we watched as the fire gutted and burned through the hotel. People running from the scene as others watched. Aoki pushed up his sunglasses a little further up as he said,
"We know he's here."
"Maybe Jia was right...maybe he is trying to lure us out."
Suddenly we heard Toki gasp for air as he dropped the cigarette from his mouth. Aoki, Akio and I turned to him as Akio said,
"You okay?"
Toki shook his head as he grabbed onto Akio's shoulder and suddenly fell. Aoki and Akio quickly tried to figure out what was going on as I looked around, seeing a crowd was forming because of the fire going on and there were hundreds of people. As I was about to turn my attention back to the situation, I watched as blue green eyes, burning as brightly as the fire before me were slowly sinking into the masses. As I looked away, I remembered the description Akio had given and I knew it was Andou. I followed him without saying anything and as I tore through the crowd, trying to get to Andou before he left. When I reached the end of the crowd however, I saw I had lost him. I cursed to myself as I then started to turn away when I saw a blade laying on the ground. It was covered in blood and I then knew what had happened to Toki. I picked up the blade and hid it as I ran back through the crowd as Akio and Aoki were pulling Toki out. We hailed a cab and quickly got out of there. As we drove back, Toki was in real pain, gritting his teeth as he clutched at his own sleeve so tightly it was almost as if he was going to tear it off. He closed his eyes as he cursed over and over again about how much pain he was in. Aoki offered the driver double if he sped, which he did and Akio tried to keep Toki calm. The sight of those blue green eyes were haunting me the entire drive back...it was Andou. I knew it was and it bothered me that I lost sight of him so soon. Questions floated through my mind of his intent and why he was doing this. Was he trying to lure the 36 Moons out by random acts of violence? But at the same time, it made no sense to lure us out by causing property damage to nothing Jia owned or had an interest in. And why random people? I looked back to my associates as I tucked my hair behind my ears, waiting until we arrived back at Jia's building.
