Part 2- From Both Sides
I spent the rest of the night in Jia's office over hearing the plans for what was going to happen. I was sitting in my soaked clothes, everyone else standing, Jun near me as he too dripped a puddle near my own. I let my hair start drying around my face as Jia said,
"So he vanished?"
"Into thin air." Said Toki.
Jia sighed, leaning back into his seat as he said,
"We'll figure this out later. If you guys spent all night looking for him and still found nothing, I think we're going to have to ask for favors. For now, you are all dismissed."
After we lost the guy last night, Jun, Toki, Aoki, Aya and myself spent the rest of the night looking for him. But he was lost. It shouldn't have been that hard to find yet he was gone into the New York night. I was soaked and cold, but didn't say anything though my fingers had turned purple and they were numb. I got up from the seat I was on and went to leave with Jun. Jun was also soaked and everytime he moved his coat apart from his body, it sloshed back against him. He ringed his sleeves out as he said,
"I'm hungry oddly enough."
"It's not odd Jun."
He laughed slightly as he said,
"Wanna change, get something to eat?"
I looked at my watch seeing it was close to three in the morning. I shook my head and said,
"No thanks. I'm going to get some sleep."
He nodded as we then left Jia's building and took the subway back to our own places.
I repeated the same routine I did the night before. I got out of my wet clothes, leaving them on the floor behind me as I went to bed after drying my face and hair. I couldn't sleep right away. Because when my work was done all I could do was think about myself. My thoughts, my actions and problems that plagued and haunted me. Nightmares that still clung. Fingertips still ghosting over my face. I would sometimes be half asleep, my eyes semi closed and I would feel something brush over my face, over my lips or my half closed eyes. I would sit up only to see it was my imagination. Needless to say, my sleep was never really peaceful. I slept for a few hours until around nine in the morning. I then woke up, staring off the side of my semi empty room where I saw the door was half open. I could see the clothes I left on the floor from the earlier hours. I felt tired, but not exhausted. I've been through worse nights before. I laid in bed for another hour before getting up and going to the door as I picked up the clothes I left. Feeling them damp, I decided to take those to be dried cleaned and then went to get ready. I knew I wouldn't be needed until much later. Jia was a tired man...if anything he would be out until the later in the afternoon. I got dressed slowly, taking my time, making coffee as I got ready.
By early that afternoon, I went to get something to eat and to get Jun. I walked over to Jun's place, picking him up as we went to eat. Jun and I more or less enjoyed each others company. It had been a long time since he and I were social to one and other...I found that even as friends, we didn't share many things in common and Jun rather resented me for having anything to do with Toki in the past. Most of the time, he made me feel ashamed of what I had...and he made me resent him for it. But, over time, we got over it when Toki and I finished. I let Jun know. Jun shrugged and said he didn't care what I did so long as I did my job. It seemed like all his intentions to be a friend of mine in the beginning when he first joined were merely just to top Toki. Anyway after that we haven't been as close. Jun and I had lunch silently as usual, Jun only stopping to eat for a moment to take a drink so he wouldn't suffocate, his eyes looking around. Sometimes, I thought he was no better then the horny trio of Akio, Aoki and Toki. He was just more subtle about it. Damn it be if he was ever compared on their level. I think he wanted to be better at Toki, even reputation wise. Anyway, once Jun finished eating he said,
"What time is it?"
"Around four."
He nodded taking a sip from his glass as he said,
"We should go. See if Jia's at work yet."
I nodded as we got up, Jun paying the bill as we left.
Jia didn't end up showing up until around six. But it was not without reason as it usually was. Jia had actually be out through New York, trying to find this guy only to come in with more bad news.
"There's another one."
Tai looked surprised as Toki sat down on the couch, lighting a cigarette as Jo, who had been talking to Akio stopped and looked over at Jia. Our oyabun swept some of his hair away from his face as he said,
"It's not just this guy all of you saw the night before, it's also someone else."
"How did you find out Jia?" Asked Jo.
"I spent my day in Queens with Takeo. The little pimp found out that according to his contacts in the borough, there is someone else in the city. I thought it might have been the same guy but the description was different. There's two of them."
Jun crossed his arms as he said,
"So...we look for both now."
"Yeah and soon. I also got in contact with the Yami, the Itto Ketsuen and the Ryuujin no Chi to put more people out there. Someone has to find something. With us out there with them, we should get at least one."
Jia sent us out to work shortly after. The usual pairs went to search the two out. Jun and I spent most of that night searching, stopping in on certain places, checking for leads and information. We came up with nothing most of the time. Jun wasn't too fond of Takeo and his ways so he preferred not to call and ask him anything. Instead, most of the time, he got in contact with Yuki. Yuki was Jun's best contact though he worked for Jia. Yuki's people worked with mostly to get the job done. Most of the time though, the job would be taken care of by someone else because they asked Takeo. It made me wonder why I bothered working with Jun because he couldn't stop looking down his nose at people, not even to do his assigned job. Anyway some of Yuki's people gave us some known whereabouts of one of the newest problems. We thanked the lower head and went to our destination.
I walked with Jun to the Hell, a club, cafe type place as I said,
"We expect to find who here Jun?"
"The other one. We know what one looks like, it should be simple finding this one."
"I guess. Considering we have a vague description of him."
Jun gave me a look as I shrugged saying,
"What, we do. You won't call Takeo and ask for something deeper."
Jun didn't say anything else and we went into the establishment. We walked downstairs as Jun and I looked around for a moment, seeing the semi crowded area. Knowing what problem number one looked like, the second one we had the description. Black hair, tall with a distinguishing tattoo that could be seen on his hand. It wasn't much but it was all we could get. Jun and I searched through, looking for any one of suspicion. I sat down at a table, ordering coffee as Jun looked around. As we sat down and tried to remain as part of the crowd, Jun looked up and said,
"Someone's slipping away."
I didn't turn as it was a habit so I said,
"Who?"
"Tall...black hair, slipping his hands into his pockets."
I nodded as Jun waited until he left as he stood up. I followed his lead as we both left, going up the stairs as we both left the area. Jun saw him again, casually walking down the street, towards the subway. Jun and I followed him as we went down the stairs to the subway and stopped at the platform. Jun and I remained far enough behind him to make him think he was safe as he took his hand out of his pockets and let them hang naturally beside him. It was there I saw that tattoo, kanji symbols down the top of his hand though I couldn't see what they said. As we heard the train approaching, Jun and I got closer ourselves. The guy stood there, unaware as we stood beside him. It was then he noticed us and turned quickly to each side and then stepped back as he said to us,
"36 Moons heads I'm guessing."
We said nothing. He then started to turn and run as Jun and I chased after him. Before he got to the stairs, Jun grabbed his coat with one hand, the railing with the other and threw all his weight back and the both of them went flying backwards. Jun fell but quickly got up, the other's coat in his hand still as our future enemy remained motionless, on his side as he laid there. Jun said,
"He probably took a knock to the head."
I nodded as I went over to him, about to pick him up when he took a swing at me. I caught his wrist, slamming it down as I stepped on his hand and withdrew my gun. I put it to his temple as I aid,
"Try that again."
He didn't move. Jun then said,
"Time we take him to see Jia huh?"
i nodded in agreement as we got him up and made him walk.
