The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
May 30, 2003

Link of the Week
Gary Schmitt, of the Project for the New American Century, reprints a remarkable column from the Heritage Foundations John Tkacik in the Asian Wall Street Journal on Norinco (see last Update), and how it reveals the complete failure of the engagement policy with Communist China.

Two and a Half Cheers for Congress
An attempt to ease supercomputer export rules one backed by the Bush Administration, went down to narrow defeat (217-201).  Gary Schmitt, of the Project for the New American Century, has high praise for the House of Representatives, but warns them that this issue is not about to go away, and calling for newer, tighter, controls on computer exports.  The Congressional Record has the roll call of the vote.

On the G-8 Plus Communist China Summit
Ellen Bork, of the Project for the New American Century, lists some recommended discussion points for President Bush as he meets PRC President Hu Jintao at the G-8 summit this weekend, and advises Bush that he can do a lot worse than to have an unpleasant meeting with Hu.  Indeed.

On Communist China and Space
Former Congressman Robert Walker warns about the PRCs space ambitions in the Washington Times.

On Communist China and Russia
Willy Wo-Lap Lam, CNN, gives a quick summary and analysis of PRC President Hu Jintaos upcoming visits to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Evian, France for the G-8 summit.

On Katrina Leung
Fred Hyatt, Washington Post, would like to know why so many of the voices against Johnny Chung et al are silent on Parlor Maid Katrina Leung, and also why so few are willing to recognize Communist China as the horrifying regime it is (and all of this from a supporter of engagement.).

On Taiwan, the World Health Organization, and SARS
Tkacik (see Link of the Week) also rips the U.S. for being unwilling to stand by Taiwan during its latest failed effort to join the World Health Organization, in the Weekly Standard.  Meanwhile, Andrew Perrin, Time Asia, looks at the increasingly devastating trail of the disease in Taiwan.  Douglas Burton also reports on the effects of SARS in the ROC to the Washington Times.

Responding to Communist Chinas anti-Taiwan stance (best seen in a letter cited in the
last Weeks Links), the co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Taiwan Representative Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) stick up for the island democracy in this letter to the Washington Post.

On Communist China and SARS
Mary Hennock, BBC, examines the effect of the disease on the PRCs aviation and airline markets.
