The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
June 27, 2003

Link of the Week
Al Santoli, senior vice president of the American Foreign Policy Council (and Member since 2003) details Communist Chinas ties to the military regimes in Burma and other anti-American dictatorships, and why the U.S. must take action against the PRC, in the Washington Times.

On the Communist Media Crackdown
The editors of the Washington Post just missed top billing with this rip the Communists for their latest media crackdown (see last Update), and lament the fate of the reporters, who represent only a fraction of the victims of the Chinese government's ongoing oppression of its own people.

On India
Paul Weyrich, who remembers Indias pro-Soviet past, now says, we ought to seriously explore the possibility that India can be a strategic ally, based on its record as an opponent and victim of terror.  His Washington Times piece, despite not mentioning Indias long rivalry with Communist China, is quite good.

On the Ecology in Communist China
John Pomfret, Washington Post, interviews Wu Dengming, and ex-Communist army officer who now fights the good, and lonely, fight against the Communists destruction of the environment and the PRCs attempts to silence him and others in this work.

On SARS and Communist China
Ceci Connolly, Washington Post, tells how medical officials worked around the Communist cover-up to identify SARS, and just how far the disease spread during that time.  Dexter Roberts, Business Week, sees the Partys most retro elements as rejuvenated by the fight against SARS.  As such, he doesnt see much chance for reform (link courtesy Randall Parker, founder of Parapundit and Member since 2003).

On Hong Kong
The editors of the Weekly Standard praise the Bush Administration somewhat for coming to democracys defense in Hong Kong.  While they wonder, and rightly so, why the Administration has waited until now, better late than never.  Indeed.

On Taiwan and Referenda
Gary Schmitt, of the Project for the New American Century, blasts the Bush Administration for pressuring Taiwan against holding referenda (see last Update) and laments the growing American weakness on defending the island democracy in general.

On Lula
Constantine C. Menges, in the Washington Times, has a stern warning for the Bush Administration, watch Brazilian President Lula da Silvas close ties to Communist China.
