Link of the Week

Bryan Preston, in
National Review Online, examines one angle in a possible Iraqi invasion the PRC hoping the war would prevent the U.S. defense of Taiwan under attack.

More On Taiwan
Ellen Bork, Contributing Editor of the
New York Sun, whacks President Bush et al for their silence during the latest war of words between ROC President Chen Shui-bian and the Communists (PDF Link via the Project for the New American Century).   Paul Jackson, Calgary Sun, also calls on the world to stand up for the island democracy.

On Human Rights, Yahoo, and Communist China

The editors of the
Washington Post blast Yahoo for agreeing to censor its web sites in Communist China.  Citing this reaction, compared to a refusal to accommodate a French law angry at the sale of Nazi paraphernalia, the editors note, (I)t's strange that Yahoo cooperates more eagerly with China's dictators than it does with a European democracy.

They end the editorial with this pertinent question: Internet cafes in China already are required to report clients' visits to subversive sites, and Chinese who have copied material from these sites have been hit with long prison sentences. Does Yahoo, a firm whose cheeky name evokes the wacky freedom of the Internet, really want to be a part of this?

On Competition in Communist China

John Pomfret,
Washington Post, looks at competition in Communist Chinas telecommunications industry.  What he finds is numerous firms all state-owned ripping out each others wires and using local Communist officials to threaten customers.  One of the firms, China Netcom, has the added advantage of being founded by Jiang Mianheng, whose father is Communist President Jiang Zemin.

Theres still time to contact the President and tell him not to appoint pro-PRC Doug Paal as de facto ambassador to Taiwan.
