| THE NORTH KOREA REPORT: JULY 22, 2002 NEWS AIR LINK BETWEEN KOREAS OPEN, TO BE USED MAINLY FOR NK NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS North and South Korea established the first inter-Korean air route over the weekend, although the BBC reports that regular passengers will not be allowed to use it (what a surprise). The main use of the air link will be to fly workers to the Stalinist regime to build the two power plants in exchange for its pledge not to continue its nuclear weapons program a pledge the U.S. has stated the North is not following. Stop the Nuclear Power Deal: As the above story notes, the United States is still building two nuclear power plants in North Korea. Meanwhile, the Stalinist regime refuses to let us inspect their nuclear weapons program to verify that it has been stopped, as the agreement demands. Use this China e-Lobby fact sheet and tell the President to cancel the deal. NORTH KOREA ENDS RICE RATIONING, WILL NOW SELL RICE TO ITS PEOPLE North Korea has apparently junked the rationing of rice, and been selling food to its people and adjusted their wages in line with their job performance (BBC). While the BBC story called it a major step towards the introduction of a market economy, it should be noted that Communist regime have sold items when they had them to their people for years. The story also did not mention what in line with their job performance meant. As North Korea has suffered a near-decade-long famine nearly 2 million dead the Stalinist regime has made matters much worse by stealing international food aid and hoarding it for Party members and the military. Anyone want to guess the job performance of Party and military members relative to the rest of the population? BRITISH FM CALLS FOR PRC TO WORK AGAINST ARMS SALES TO IRAQ, NORTH KOREA Jack Straw, Foreign Minister for the United Kingdom, in Beijing for bilateral talks with Communist China, called on the PRC to help stop the proliferation of weapons to states such as Iraq and North Korea (BBC). Of course, Communist China is one of the biggest culprits in this area, with a history of weapons sales to Iran, Syria, Libya, and Iraq; North Korea is the PRCs oldest ally. COMMENTARY/ANALYSIS EXILE SOON OK LEE TESTIFIES TO HORRIFYING PRISON CONDITIONS IN NORTH KOREA Confirming much of what was reported in the June 18 NK Report, Soon Ok Lee testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee last month on the infanticide, torture, political executions, and other atrocities in the prisons of the Stalinist regime. The Guardian (UK) excerpted her testimony and made this report.
