This weeks update includes an attempt to work the hyperlink feature into the stories, to cut back on length without losing content.  The links should go straight to the relevant, sourced story.

Link of the Week
Senator Jesse Helms (R-North Carolina), former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, takes note of Beijings links to the Taliban and its ruthless crackdown in East Turkestan in the Washington Times.

On Communist China and the Terrorist War
Both Washington newspapers editorialized against the possibility of President Bush cozying up to Communist China on Thursday.  However, the
Washington Post was surprisingly more pointed and detailed in its opposition than the usually more conservative Washington Times, especially regarding the deeply pro-American Uighur Muslims and the Communist crackdown under which they suffer.

From a different angle, John Derbyshire, in National Review Online, looks at the psychological similarities between
Osama bin Ladens rage at the U.S. and Communist Chinas desire to swallow Taiwan.

On the APEC Conference (still ongoing)
CNNs Willy Wo-Lap Lam says Beijing hasnt won any concessions from Bush yet.

Bao Tong, in the
Washington Post, tells President Bush he needs to push Communist China on human rights during the conference.  Boa was the top political aide to Zhao Ziyang, Communist Party chief during the Tiananmen Square protests who backed the demonstrators and was fired for it after the massacre.

On General Foreign Policy
The
Washington Post looks at the rise of Communist Chinas power and ambitions in Asia, and the reaction of other Asian nations, which are looking to the U.S. to counter the Peoples Republic.
