| CHINA E-LOBBY UPDATE TOP STORY: HOUSE SPEAKER APPOINTS COMMUNIST CHINESE LOBBYIST TOP DEFENSE ADVISOR HAD TIES TO FIRM PARTLY-OWNED BY COMMUNIST CHINA Insight magazine reported that Nancy Dorn, appointed chief defense advisor to House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois), was a registered agent of Hutchison Whampoa, the firm that currently controls the container ports on the Panama Canal. Before her appointment by Hastert on Thursday, she lobbied to block H. Con. Res. 186, a bill blocking further Communist influence and control of the canal. The magazine also reported Dorn, who served in the Reagan and Bush Administration, sold all her GOP contacts to HW. Hastert says he knew nothing about Dorn�s history with the firm, which is owned in part by Communist China, including her work against heavily Republican sponsored HCR 186. The magazine reported Hastert believed Dorn was a �stay at home mom.� Links: Insight, Frank Gaffney column in Washington Times PNTR NEWS: SEANTE VOTE DELAYED UNTIL SEPTEMBER LOTT WON�T LET PNTR COME TO VOTE UNLESS THOMPSON-TORRICELLI COMES FIRST Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Mississippi) said Tuesday that he PNTR will be voted upon in September. Lott wants outstanding budget bills to be passed first. Also at issue is a measure by Fred Thompson (R-Tennessee) and Robert Torricelli (D-New Jersey). Their bill/amendment would effectively suspend PNTR in some areas if the People�s Republic of China continues selling weapons to rouge states. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives shot down attempts to block the extension of NTR for another year. President Clinton extended NTR when it became clear PNTR was running into the unexpected trouble in the Senate. The House usually upholds NTR, so that isn�t the best indicator of what may happen should PNTR come up for a vote again. The Washington Post reported that another Communist Chinese source of funds, Lt. Col. Liu Choaying, is also involved in the corruption, but President Jiang Zemin considers her a close ally and thus is protecting her. Link: Washington Post FIRM ACCUSED OF GIVING TECHNOLOGY TO COMMUNIST CHINA GIVEN PENTAGON AWARD Loral Space Corporation, under investigation for handing over sensitive technology information to Communist China in 1996, received a Pentagon award for �outstanding security performance and practices.� The Washington Post reported from a source at Loral that the Pentagon withdrew the award hours later. A Congressional committee noted that these Communist immigrants provided U.S. technology secrets to the PRC. A Commerce Department official said most become U.S. citizens. The PRC has repeatedly bashed American attempts to defend itself against states such as North Korea, Libya, and Iran, all PRC military technology clients. The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy in China said a sentence of life imprisonment is possible. The Tiananmen Square massacre is still called a �counterrevolutionary rebellion by the Communist authorities. Link: AFP TWO MORE FALUN GONG PRACTITIONERS DIE IN POLICE CUSTODY Officials and relatives told AFP two Falun Gong practitioners died in police custody, raising the number who have died in custody to 24. The Information Center on Human Rights and Democracy in China said one of the followers had several fresh wounds, and the other may have died from poor ventilation. Communist China banned Falun Gong, which still has tens of millions of members, a year ago Saturday as an �evil cult.� Link: AFP OVER 100 FALUN GONG PROTESTORS ARRESTED IN TIANANMEN SQUARE As the anniversary approaches, Falun Gong continues to show its strength against the year-long Communist crackdown. Police arrested over 100 protestors in Tiananmen Square on Wednesday. The coordinated protests stunned police, who had to act quickly to clear the site before Russian President Vladimir Putin made an appearance, according to the Associated Press. Presently, suspects only have a right not to answer �unrelated question� to the case. Many have been tortured into �confessing� crimes. The setting is a small mainland village occupied by Japan during World War II. The Cannes Film Festival award winning film was banned because the villagers were �not hating the Japanese as they should.� Jiang told AFP the Communist�s ideological rigidity reminded him of the Cultural Revolution. From 1966-1976, ruthless Red Guards, led by Mao Tse-Tung, terrorized Communist Party members, and anyone else, considered �right-wing.� Deng sticks to the Party line on Mao, claiming his wife and Lin Bao were mostly responsible for the massive purge that killed tens of millions. The project will force 1 million people off their land and cause major ecological damage. Despite this, and nearly $600 million in project funds stolen by corrupt officials, Li�s brainchild continues. Over $500 million was squirreled away for loans, cars, property, and �other non-scheduled projects� to line the pockets of the Communist officials. The two re-stated their joint opposition to the proposed American missile defense, and pledged to further cooperate to challenge �American hegemony.� Russia has already been following this policy � as Communist China�s largest naval supplier. AFP reported that the two survivors fear execution if they are returned to Communist China. The UK is also worried about possible repercussions to the escapees and their families. They did not, however, rule out an invasion, nor did they give any indication they would slow the massive missile buildup occurring just opposite Taiwan. Last month, two French parliament members blasted Beijing for �putting Taiwan into quarantine.� Link: AFP MAYOR OF XIAMEN�S TAIWAN VISIT DELAYED Zhu Yayan, mayor of scandal-plagued Xiamen, will have to wait to visit Kaohsiung to meet with its mayor, Democratic Progressive Party chairman-elect Frank Hsieh. Zhu had hoped to be in Kaohsiung this week, but Taiwanese officials said they would not be able to process the visa applications in that short a period of time. While the IOI is not very well known, it is one of the few international organizations where Taiwan is recognized as the Republic of China, and not a piece of Communist China.
