IN ATTEMPT TO WIN COOPERATION, BUSH MAY NIX POST-TIANANMEN ARMS BAN
The
Washington Post reports today that the Bush Administration is considering dropping a long-held ban on the sale of military or military-related equipment to Communist China.  The move would be an attempt to win more cooperation with the Peoples Republic, particularly regarding intelligence, in the terrorist war.  The Post reports that Communist China has been far less helpful than it claims to be.  Link: Washington Post

U.S. UNLIKELY TO SUPPORT CRACKDOWNS IN TIBET AND EAST TURKESTAN

CNNs Willy Wo-Lap Lam reported that the Communists is desperate to use this weekends Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to make up for diplomatic setbacks Beijing has incurred since the September 11 events.  In particular, the PRC is deeply upset at the growing American presence in Central Asia, and its warming ties with Russia.  From the above story, the plan may already be working.  Link:

Still, one of Beijings big demands that the U.S. block efforts of Tibetans and Uighur Muslims from East Turkestan (called Xinjiang by the PRC) to raise funds or stage anti-Chinese protests on U.S. soil.  Tibet was an expected non-starter, but the U.S. has kept mum on East Turkestan, too, despite soothing words to the Russians on Chechnya, and any concession to the PRC on the issue is most unlikely.

MUSLIM EAST TURKESTAN HEAVILY BACKS AMERICA AND THE WAR ON TERRORISM
Meanwhile, in East Turkestan itself, support for the U.S and its war on terrorism is very strong the
Washington Post reports scarves patterned after the American flag are sold in the deeply conservative Muslim cities of Kashgar and Hetian.  Almost none of it is well known, however, due to the crushing Communist crackdown on the Uighurs.  Link: Washington Post

The Uighurs make up the majority population in the region, and the Communist crackdown has led many to support an independent East Turkestan. The Post noted that Beijings crackdown was so severe before September 11 that the PRC was unable to make it worse since then.  This has led to very strong support for the U.S. perceived as anti-PRC here including support for the terrorist war. (See above link)

EAST TURKESTANIS HOPES U.S., WHICH THEY CONSIDER A FRIEND, WILL NOT FORGET THEM
The major concern among Uighur activists here is that they will be forgotten or worse, lumped in with the terrorists by Americans.  There has been some violence from independence supporters, but most pained to tell the Post that We are not terrorists.  The story also mentions the plight Rebiya Kadeer a Uighur human rights activist jailed last year for spreading the word about PRC abuses in the region.

HELMS DETAILS PRC LINKS TO TALIBAN, COMMUNISTS WAR WITH ALL OF ISLAM

Senator Jesse Helms (R-North Carolina), former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, took note of Communist Chinas links to the Taliban including a defense pact in 1998 and the economic agreement of September 11 in the
Washington Times.  He also warned against getting too cozy with the Communists in light of their crackdown in East Turkestan, which he called a war with all of Islam.  Link: Washington Times

COMMUNISTS REPEATS ITS OPPOSITION TO WIDENING TERRORIST WAR

Communist China again told the U.S. it would not support any operations outside Afghanistan.  CNNs Willy Wo-Lap Lam also noted PRC concerns over a pro-American regime in Kabul despite the BBC reporting that a coalition government was acceptable.  It should be noted that the other leading state sponsors of terrorism Libya, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, have all been clients of the Communist military.  Link:

OTHER EAST TURKESTAN (XINJIANG) NEWS

COMMUNIST RAZE MOSQUE, ARREST PROTESTERS, AND DEMAND WORLD SUPPORT FOR IT

Also in East Turkestan, The Communists demolished a mosque in Hotan the third this year and arresting 180 people protesting its destruction, according to the East Turkestan Information Center.  Amnesty International called the Communist crackdown did not distinguish between terrorism and separatism, and that most Uighurs were arrested merely for peaceful opposition or dissent.  Link:
CNN

Meanwhile, the Communists are trying to milk what little support they have given to the terrorist war for all its worth.  PRC Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi angrily denounced East Turkestan terrorists and demanded support and understanding for the Communists as part of the international effort.  The reference was obvious.  Link:

U.S. CITIZEN INDICTED FOR GATHERING STATE SECRETS

Communist China indicted Fong Fuming, an American citizen and consultant for an engineering company, for bribery and obtaining commercial documents considered state secrets for a foreign company.  Fongs family denied the charges.  The Communists have a habit of reclassifying embarrassing information as state secrets to go after those who revealed it to the outside world.  Link:

Meanwhile, Falun Gong followers in the U.S. filed a lawsuit against Zhao Zhifei, deputy head of police in the central province of Hubei, for the death of two of their fellow practitioners in police custody.  The Communists have been mum about one of the victims, but claimed the other one committed suicide by banging his head into its cell bars; in effect, theyre saying, he beat himself to death.  (See above link)

INDIA GETS EDGY ABOUT U.S. WARMING TO PAKISTAN
The continuing coziness between the U.S. and Pakistan is making India nervous.  After opening up Indian bases to the U.S. military for the terrorist war an unprecedented move India has seethed quietly as little is made of Pakistans moral support for Muslim fanatics in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir.  Muslim terrorists killed over 40 in an attack on the state capital a few weeks ago.  Link: Washington Times

Pakistans close relationship with Communist China has worried India for years, so much so that the current government considers the PRC, not its Muslim neighbor, its biggest threat.  India has also been growing closer to the U.S. over the last few years, in part due to shared wariness over the PRC.
