The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
December 17, 2004

Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror is now available here (or call 1-888-280-7715).

The next Summer Olympics, in 2008, will take place in Beijing.  Will the U.S. take part in a Communist Chinese version of the Munich Nazi propaganda event of 1936?  Sign the petition for an American boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Link(s) of the Week
The Epoch Times Nine Commentaries on the Chinese Communist Party continues with Part III, Part IV, and Part V (see the 12/3 and last Weeks Links for the previous commentaries).

On Communist China and Stalinist-controlled northern Korea
Sign up for the next Northern Korea Report (out on Monday).
Jason Lim, in the
Washington Times, makes a compelling and comprehensive case against outsourcing the future of northern Korea to Communist China.

On the Taiwanese Elections
There are several analyses of the pan-blue upset victory.  The best one comes from Daniel Blumenthal, American Enterprise Institute, in the Daily Standard (Weekly Standard website).  Also weighing in are Neil Gough (Time Asia), Chris Hogg (BBC), John Kusumi (China Support Network), and yours truly (full disclosure: yours truly endorsed the defeated pan-greens).

On the European Arms Embargo
Ellen Bork, of the Project for the New American Century, highlights the opposition to Communist China in the Czech Republic, and in her New York Sun (via PNAC) column calls for explaining the strategic threat from China to the European public and more support for anti-PRC nations within the European Union.

On Communist China, the United States, and the Global Economy
Matthew Forney, Time Asia, examines the new Lenovos financial future.  Peter S. Goodman, Washington Post, examines the broader issue of Communist firms worldwide buying spree.  The Posts editors make a weak case against tough restrictions on Communist textile imports, as do the Washington Times editors.  None focus on the issue of national security.

Karen A. Tramontano, president of Global Fairness Initiative, calls for U.S. consumers to make buying decisions strengthening labor standards for textile and garment workers worldwide in particular,
steering clear of imports from Communist China in the Washington Post.

On the Kidnappings Unleashed by One Child
Louisa Lim, BBC, follows Li Qifang as he tries to find his kidnapped son, and finds the cadres efforts wanting: Time and time again, the [police] have told us they're investigating . . . After two years with no information or leads at all, how can we believe them?

On Human Rights in Communist China
Ming Bao, News Net (via Epoch Times), interviews dissident and recently released political prisoner Liu Jingsheng (see 12/1 Update).
