THE NORTH KOREA REPORT: APRIL 15, 2002

TWO DOZEN NORTH KOREANS DEFECT TO SOUTH AS FAMILY REUNIONS ARE SET
As North and South Korea agreed to reunions for separated families, to occur in late April and early May (CNN), 24 residents of the Stalinist regime defected to the South (BBC).  This brings the number of Koreans who escaped the land of repression and starvation to 238, on pace to break last years record of 583 defections from the North to the South.

STALINIST REGIME PUSHING PEOPLE TOWARD LOOMING FOOD CRISIS

North Korea, pushed into a famine by Communist economic mismanagement, will run out of food in three month's time without outside help, according to the BBC.  Past aid to the Stalinist regime has been stolen by the Communists to feed party members, the armed forces, and their families.  According to CNN, demands from food donors to ensure food is going to the right places have been unmet.

U.S., JAPAN, AND SOUTH KOREA MEET TO DISCUSS BREAKTHROUGH

Envoys from the United States, Japan, and South Korea met this week to discuss the breakthrough in the Souths talks with North Korea (BBC).  The Stalinist regime and long-time Communist Chinese ally agreed to talks on economic cooperation, family reunions and a possible inter-Korean railway.

U.S. ENVOY MAY GO TO PYONGYANG

American envoy Charles Pritchard may go to North Korea for talks with the Stalinist regime, according to the BBC.  Pritchard will meet with Lim Dong-won, who met with the North Korean Communists last week.  The Communist Chinese ally indicated that it wanted warmer ties with the U.S. likely due to the food crisis mentioned above in those talks.

Stop the Nuclear Power Deal:
The United States is building two nuclear power plants in North Korea while the Stalinist regime refuses to let us inspect their nuclear weapons program to verify they have halted it as required in the deal.  Tell the President to end the deal.

Sign the Boycott Petition:
In reaction to the 2008 Olympic Games being awarded to Beijing, the China e-Lobby has begun a petition for an American boycott of those games.
