The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
August 13, 2004

Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror is now available: here, at Amazon, or call 1-888-280-7715.

News on East Turkestan: For those who happen to be in the Washington area, the Uighur diaspora is gathering next month to form the government in exile for the Republic of East Turkestan.  We will keep you informed of dates and events as they are firmed up.

Link of the Week
Commentator Paul Lin details
Communist Chinas increasingly belligerent behavior in recent years, towards its own people and the rest of the world, in the Association for Asian Research (via Epoch Times).

On Communist China and the Olympic Games

Sign the petition for an American boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Hannah Beech, Time Asia, has an account of the resurfacing of the Maoist athletic meat-grinder as the 2008 Games approach.  Beech also looks at how the cadres are preparing the city for the Olympics.  Among other things, urban planners have reduced entire historic neighborhoods to rubble in preparation for 2008.

On Communist China and the United States
Dr. Alexander Nemets returns to Newsmax with a detailed column on Communist Chinas military buildup and modernization, and the role therein of its favorite arms supplier: Russia.  His once and again colleague Lev Navrozov notes how Communist Chinas totalitarianism is camouflaged to trick American elites into thinking the regime is not totalitarian.

Charles R. Smith, normally of Newsmax, but this time writing in
Insight, wonders about Democratic presidential nominee John Kerrys ties to Communist China particularly a wheeler-dealer friend neck deep in PRC ventures, including controversial technology transfers.

While were on the subject of American politics, if anyone finds anything new about Katrina Leung the FBI agent/California GOP fundraiser/PRC double agent
please let me know; it has completely vanished from the radar screen in these parts.

Catherine Rampell, MSNBC, interviews Joan Hinton, a former American physicist who defected to Communist China in 1952.  Shes
as Maoist as ever.

On Communist China and Sudan
Nat Hentoff, in the Washington Times, blasts the international community for ignoring the coming genocide in Sudans Darfur region, including Sudans largest oil investor: Communist China, which was one of only two UN Security Council members not to support a resolution condemning the Darfur outrage (see 8/5 Update).

On the Velvet Crackdown (Hong Kong)
Edward Cody, Washington Post, examines the latest attempts by the Communist-appointed regime to win over the hearts of angry city dwellers the Bible.  Do the cadres really think prompting the question What would Jesus do? is actually a good idea?

Cody also examines the political climate one month from Legislative Council elections in the city, and finds
pro-Communists optimistic and pro-democracy supporters frustrated (note: this sort of analysis is typical before election day in Hong Kong, usually followed by big pro-democracy wins and shocked pundits afterward).

More On Human Rights in Communist China
Curry Kenworthy, Field Director of China Support Network, gives an excellent account of just how far from democracy Communist China really is, and how its going in the wrong direction.

On the State of the Workers in the Workers State
Li YongYan, Asia Times (via Epoch Times), examines the difference between the glitzy, prosperous Potemkin cities of Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen and the impoverished PRC rural interior.  Li Tuzhong, Epoch Times, details how Education Minister Chen Zhili turned schooling in Communist China into a for-profit business with illegal fees.

On Corruption in Communist China
Meanwhile, Mu Muying, Epoch Times, chronicles the rise, corruption, and fall of PRC Vice Premier Hui Liangyu.
