The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China June 11, 2004 Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror is now available: here, at Amazon, or call 1-888-280-7715. Link of the Week Tian Yuan, Epoch Times (HK), chronicles the life of Cheng Mingfang, and her painful transition from a private businesswoman to a political prisoner and human rights activist. The Aftermath of the Tiananmen Square Massacre The China Support Network marks the fifteenth anniversary of its founding in the aftermath of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. CSN Executive Director John Kusumi notes the state of the movement 15 years later; they were also kind enough to publish the prepared remarks of yours truly on the massacre. Susan Jakes, Time Asia, notes the ominous disappearance of SARS whistleblower and Tiananmen massacre critic Dr. Jiang Yanyong (see 4/11/03 and 3/19 Weeks Links). On the Falun Gong War Zheng Wen, Epoch Times, compares the apologetic American response to Abu Ghraib to Communist Chinas triumphant balderdash on the crackdown against Falun Gong. More on Human Rights in Communist China Stefan Hammond, Asia Times, notes and explains Communist Chinas deep fear of science fiction and fantasy films. On Jiang Zemin The editors of the Epoch Times make a devastating sketch of Central Military Commission Chairman Jiang Zemin, although their assessment of the Hu-Wen team is, in the opinion of this quarter, far too optimistic. On the Scandals Surrounding Packaged Foods Zeng Renquan, Epoch Times, blasts the Communists for trying to protect the culprits who package poisoned food for supermarket shelves (see also 5/7 Weeks Links). On the Communist Chinese Economy Jamie Miyazaki, Asia Times (via Epoch Times), details the impact of Communist Chinas thirst for oil on the world markets, and what could happen if the Communists, as likely, miss their soft landing economic plan. On Taiwan John Zaracostas, Washington Times, paints a far too optimistic picture of the growing economic ties between Taiwan and Communist China. On the Velvet Crackdown (Hong Kong) Anthony Spaeth, Time Asia, examines the political state of Hong Kong today. Time Asia also printed a column by Anson Chan, head of the HK bureaucracy when British rule ended, in which she pleads with Beijing to put a little more trust in us. On Tibet Peter Worthington, a columnist for the Toronto Sun, laments the forgetfulness of many (but not all) Canadian politicians about Tibet (see also 4/30, 5/7, and 5/14 Weeks Links).
