The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China July 9, 2004 Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror is now available: here, at Amazon, or call 1-888-280-7715. Link of the Week Sharon Kilarski details the Communist Chinas history of Communist Chinas use of gangsters to do their dirty work abroad. Her Epoch Times piece documents how the Peoples Republic has turned ethnic Chinese associations overseas into de facto enforcers by whatever means necessary of the Communist Party line. More On the Falun Gong Shooting Benjamin Hurley, Epoch Times, interviews practitioner Cheezong Lee (a.k.a. Grant Lu). Lee was a passenger in the car driven by shooting victim David Liang (see last Weeks Links). Sound of Hope Radio (via Epoch Times) interviews analyst Ling Feng for his view, and also talks to one of the victims, who naturally is too scared to identify himself beyond Mr. Wang. The editors of the Epoch Times note the strong contrast between Communist Chinas full court press on the violent attack in Gwadar, Pakistan (see 5/5 Update) and its complete lack of response to the South Africa shooting. The Falun Dafa Information Center (via Epoch Times) documents how the long arm of Communist repression against the group reached around the world last year. Thai Ton, Epoch Times, also weighs in on the Communists sordid history against the spiritual movement. On Zeng Qinghong The Falun Gong shooting has turned the spotlight on Communist Vice President Zeng Qinghong. The editors of the Epoch Times have four pieces on Zeng: his rise to power, what he has done to hold it, how the shooting and the Hong Kong march could affect his position, and what the shooting could mean for his patron: Jiang Zemin. On Chinas Honest Doctor Thats what the editors of the Washington Post called Dr. Jiang Yanyong, the SARS whistleblower-turned-political prisoner for his insistence that the Tiananmen Square massacre was a mistake (see last Update). More on Human Rights in Communist China Not even writers praising Communist China can avoid the exacto knife of the censor. A web poster named D.H. had this to say to Jacob Sullum (in the Washington Times): I wrote an article praising less censorship in China and it got censored. I hereby retract my praise. Shengde Lian, head of the Free China Movement, calls for the liberation of his homeland (speech transcript from China Support Network). Joel Miller, World Net Daily, details Communist Chinas persecution of dissident activists and reporters. On the Velvet Crackdown (Hong Kong) Anthony Spaeth, Time Asia, observes the Communist reaction from the half-million marchers in Hong Kong last week. The BBC gauged the reaction of the local press (naturally, all the pro-Communist newspapers blasted the marchers). Taiwans Central News Agency (via Epoch Times) also took the pulse of the citys media. Freedom Times (via Epoch Times) details Communist Chinas broken promises to Hong Kong. Chris Hogg, BBC, examines what the future could hold for the city, and what it could mean for the real target of one country, two systems: Taiwan. On Tibet The Dalai Lama, Tibets spiritual leader, turned 69 on Tuesday. The China Support Network used the occasion to call for an end to the Communist persecution in Tibet. Skip Shaputnic and Dorothy Berger, of San Diego Friends of Tibet, call on the world to act against Communist Chinas destruction of the occupied nation. On Communist China and Iraq Check out the Communist China and the Terrorist War page. Robert Alt, National Review Online, visits Iraq, meets an anti-Communist Chinese journalist who likes what he sees of the American involvement, and concludes: Anyone who wonders why America's efforts in Iraq are important need only talk to Mr. Wu. You see, the world is watching. China is watching (emphasis in original). On The Space Race Sun Laiyan, head of the PRCs China National Space Administration, talks to the BBC about the regimes plans for the future (see also last Update). More on Communist China and the United States Lev Navrozov, Newsmax, wonders if a Fahrenheit 9/11-like film on Communist Chinas threat to the U.S. would shake the elite conspiracy of silence on the PRC. Harry Wu, of the Laogai Research Foundation, calls on Congress to reject funding for the United Nations Population Fund so long as it continues to cooperate with the PRC authors of one child, in NRO. On the 2008 Olympiad Sign the petition for an American boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. John Kusumi, Executive Director of the China Support Network (and member since 2003) calls for the Olympics to be taken out of Communist China.
