The Weeks Links: Feature and Opinion Pieces on Communist China
November 7, 2003

Yours truly has detailed Communist Chinas history of aiding terrorist states, Saddam Hussein, the Taliban, and al Qaeda, in my new book, Dragon in the Dark: How and Why Communist China Helps Our Enemies in the War on Terror, soon to be available for order here, and later at Amazon and other online retail sites. D.J. McGuire

Link of the Week
William R. Hawkins, of the U.S. Business and Industry Council, does it again with another terrific Washington Times column on how Communist Chinas deliberate currency devaluation and other trade practices are part of China's drive to become the strongest economy in Asia and to overturn the global balance of power that currently favors the United States.

On Communist China, Oil, and Terrorism
Parapundit founder Randall Parker (Member since 2003), details Communist Chinas growing appetite for oil, and what it means for the world economy and the war against terror.

Check out  this story and more on the Communist China and the Terrorist War page.

More On Communist China and Trade
The editors of the Washington Times, long a supporter of free trade with Communist China, are starting to get it.  They take note of the Communists refusal to adhere to its trade agreements, including the WTO deal that won the PRC Permanent Normal Trade Relations, and belittle the mainstream, free-trade-at-any price media.  Hear, hear.

Meanwhile, Irwin M. Stelzer sees the
Bush Administrations plan on Communist Chinas deliberately devalued currency as trying to buy time until Bush is safely reinstalled in the White House.  Stelzer notes Communist Chinas large buying of Treasury bonds, but does not bring national security issues into his Weekly Standard column.

Finally, Bruce Bartlett,
National Review Online, was kind enough to display his tunnel vision on the subject in his second paragraph: The only reason anyone cares about China's trade is because they operate within a mercantilist framework.  Bartletts complete lack of concern over national security grows ever more galling.

On Communist Chinas Space Program
Notra Trulock, from the AIM Report, details how the U.S. helped Communist Chinas space program, and why the Communist militarys plans for space are a danger to us, in Newsmax.

On Corruption in Communist China
Peter Goodspeed, National Post (Cdn.), gives a summary of the rise and fall of both corrupt private businessman Zhou Zhengyi, and the lawyer who exposed him, Zeng Enchong (see also 6/4, 6/11, 6/18, and 10/29 Updates).

On Hong Kong
Chris Hogg, BBC, notes the 100th birthday of the South China Morning Post, without noting how its attempt to curry favor with Communist China led to the high-profile resignation of Willy Wo-Lap Lam, who is now with CNN (see 11/8/00 Update).  Hogg also has a quick summary of the state of democracy in Hong Kong.

More on the Late Madame Chiang
Pico Iyer offers this eulogy in Time Asia.  Barry Farber, of Newsmax, has this take on her life.

On Communist China and Pakistan
Tim Luard, BBC, examines Communist Chinas friendship with Pakistan.
