CHINA E-LOBBY UPDATE: JANUARY 5, 2005

This will be the final China e-Lobby weekly Update.  From here on out, the information and links normally in the Updates will be posted on the new China e-Lobby blog, starting tomorrow.  The posts will, or at least should, be daily events, barring weekends (note: non-newsletter pages, such as the Beijing Olympic Boycott, Nine Commentaries, etc., plus all past newsletters will still be available through the China e-Lobby website).

The new blog will mean faster transmit of information and prevent some news from getting buried or downgraded, as must be done with a weekly format.  The information to which everyone has become accustomed in the three newsletters will not disappear.  On the contrary, the blog will make the information more readily and quickly available. This is not the end of the China e-Lobby; it is the next phase, one I hope will bring greater success to all of us working to build an anti-Communist political coalition in America and to help the Chinese people free themselves from the largest, bloodiest, cruelest, and most dangerous criminal enterprise on earth: the Chinese Communist Party.  Thanks once more to all of those who have supported us, and, I hope, will continue to support us.

TOP STORY: COMMUNIST CHINESE ESPIONAGE EXPOSED IN CANADA
RIGHT AND LEFT CALL FOR END TO CANADIAN AID TO PRC, NIXING OF NORANDA BUYOUT
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service reported that unnamed foreign regimes of which one unnamed official called Communist China the most aggressive (National Post 12/29, Canada) were after 'Canada's scientific and technological developments, critical economic and information infrastructure, military and other classified information.

The report detailed how the Peoples Republic uses visiting students, scientists, business people and delegations to obtain industrial secrets and high-technology that will benefit Chinese companies and its military-industrial complex.  For reports of spying in the U.S., see the
10/4/00, 10/25/00, 11/1/00, 12/27/00, 2/12/03, 8/13/03, and 8/20/03 Updates.

Condemnation of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martins engagement was fast in coming: the opposition Conservative Party called for all Canadian economic aid to the PRC to come to a halt (
National Post 12-30).  Interestingly, Pat Martin (no relation), a member of the left-wing New Democratic Party, joined the CP in calling for an end to the aid.

The possible acquisition of Noranda, a major Canadian mining corporation, by PRC-owned Minmetals Corporation was also panned by the NDPs Martin and the Conservatives.  Given the Prime Minister Martins Liberal Party does not have a legislative majority, the CP-NDP common ground on Communist China could lead to significant changes in Canadian policy.

An unnamed senior American official told the Washington Times (last item) that outgoing Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitages disturbing comments on Taiwan (see 12/22/04 and last Updates) do not alter President Bush's tough policy of helping the island defend itself from any mainland attack.

There were even whispers that the one-foot-out-the-door Armitage was trying to improve his business prospects in China.  Bush had previously said he would do whatever it takes to prevent the Communists from conquering the island democracy (see

ISRAEL MAY TRY TO GET CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL FOR HARPY UPGRADES
The U.S. demand that Israel not return upgraded Harpy drones to Communist China has put the American ally in what an unnamed Israeli diplomat called a very difficult position (Cybercast News).  The diplomat noted that Israel to avoid the humiliating option of agreeing to the demand may try to fight it out in Congress and say it's grossly unfair.

Of course, the last time Israel tried to hang tough the aborted PHALCON sale in 2000 several members in Congress called for cutting American aid to Israel in retaliation.  Israel later cancelled the sale (see

REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) NEWS
CHENS ELECTION CONFIRMED BY HIGH COURT, AGAIN
Taiwans High Court threw out the second of two challenges to President Chen Shui-bians re-election from the pan-blue opposition.  The pan-blues tried to link their claim to the Ukraines Victor Yushchenko and his successful push for a revote, but say the courts here . . . the opposition failed to provide evidence of systematic fraud (BBC).

Having now failed in every attempt to reverse the will of the people, the pan-blue parties the Nationalists and People First may take some time to ponder how their attempts to cozy up to Communist China cost them millions of votes between presidential ballots.  Also reporting: VOA via
Epoch Times
